Label on the back of the Sala Parés in Barcelona Work registered in the RKD archives with the number: 296750 Dutch painter, son of the painter Joris van der Haagen, continued his father's style in the purest tradition of the seventeenth-century Dutch landscape, specializing in maritime scenes, as in the present work, where an imposing ship passes firing salutes next to a fortified tower. It has been suggested that the scene could take place along the coast of Gibraltar, perhaps because it recalls the fortification of one of the watchtowers that lined the Cadiz coast. Pieter de Graeff, Lord of Purmerland and Ilpendam and Lord of castle Ilpenstein, was administrator of the Dutch East India Company and lived in the castle which housed his art collection.

Hinter einem grossen Eichenbaum, der die Szenerie auf der rechten Seite flankiert, erstreckt sich eine weite Landschaft mit einer Flusswindung und einem Schloss am linken Bildrand. Mit seinen weichen Hügeln, die den Blick bis weit in die Ferne zu einem Hafen lenken, und den kleinen um einen Maibaum tanzenden Figuren im Mittelgrund, ist das hier angebotene, stimmungsvolle und sehr qualitätsvolle Gemälde sicherlich nicht direkt nach der Natur gemalt, sondern stellt eine imaginäre Landschaft dar. Gleichzeitig lässt die Landschaft an die Gegend um Arnhem und Rijnpoort denken, die der Landschaftsmaler Joris van der Haagen mehrfach zum Thema machte. Die Figurenstaffage in seinen Gemälden wurde oft von einem anderen Künstler ausgeführt und so wurden wohl auch die rastenden Figuren rechts in unserem Gemälde später ergänzt, um der Darstellung eine arkadische Stimmung zu verleihen. Die Panoramalandschaft war eine spezielle Form der niederländischen Landschaftsmalerei und das Konzept einer umfassenden, weiten Ansicht, ob topographisch genau oder frei erfunden, unterlag verschiedenen Entwicklungen im Laufe des 17. Jahrhunderts. Oft integrierten die Maler optische Stützen wie Baumstämme und Baumgruppen im Vordergrund, die als rahmende Elemente den Blick in die Tiefe der Landschaften führen sollte, wie in dem hier angebotenen Gemälde. Joris van der Haagen, der sich auf Panorama- und Waldlandschaften sowie Stadtansichten spezialisierte, erlernte die Malkunst sehr wahrscheinlich bei seinem Vater Abraham. 1639 zog er nach Den Haag, wo er 1643 in die Lukasgilde aufgenommen wurde. Seine feinen Zeichnungen bilden einen grossen Teil seines Werks und belegen seine zahlreichen Reisen in den Süden der Niederlande, ins Rheinland und nach Frankreich. Ansichten von Kleve, Arnhem und Maastricht sind besonders oft in seinem Oeuvre zu finden. Eine seiner bekanntesten Kompositionen mit Blick auf die Schwanenburg bei Kleve befindet sich im Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (Inv. Nr. SK-C-138, um 1640-1669, Öl auf Leinwand, 109 x 120 cm).

A CANAL SCENE BY MOONLIGHT measurements note 411 by 549mm indistinctly signed and inscribed in pen and brown ink, lower left point of the brush and brown ink and wash, heightened with white, on blue paper PROVENANCE Charles Rogers (L.624); Heneage Finch, 5th Earl of Aylesford (L.58); Sir Bruce Ingram (L.1405a); from whom acquired as a Christmas present, 1952 NOTE Joris van der Haagen trained in Arnhem, under his father, Abraham, before settling in The Hague in 1639. There, he became a prominent figure: he was a founding member of the confraternity Pictura in 1656, and held offices in the Guild of St. Luke. Views of The Hague and its environs feature prominently amongst van der Haagen's drawings and painting, and although the location depicted in the present drawing has not so far been identified, it may also be in that area. The artist also made trips to the region of the lower Rhine, around Kleve. A stylistically comparable drawing, a view in the Haagsche Bos, is in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no. 15132). It also employs a large format, and uses the distinctive, painterly technique seen in our drawing. Furthermore, the Albertina drawing has a lengthy inscription in brown ink across the lower centre, of a type that appears on a number of the artist's drawings, and is apparently similar to the inscription also originally present on this drawing (see M. Bisanz-Prakken, Drawings from the Albertina: Landscape in the Age of Rembrandt, exhibition catalogue, New York, The Drawing Center, and Fort Worth, Kimbell Art Museum, 1995, cat. no. 60).
