    • 20th Century "Path to Home" Painting by Jack Hagman
      Jun. 08, 2017

20th Century "Path to Home" Painting by Jack Hagman

      Est: $1,000 - $1,500

United States, artist Jack Hagman (American, b. 1937), painting entitled "Path to Home" ca. 1980 CE. Capturing a moment of tranquility in nature, a serene landscape depicting rays of sun lighting up the forest from its leafy canopy to the ground below. Although the subject matter is traditional, Hagman's style is quite modern. Note how he has reversed the light values so that objects in the foreground are darker than the background - placing the emphasis on flat silhouettes rather than naturalistically modeled forms. Interestingly, this technique is similar to that of the early 20th century Harlem Renaissance modernist Aaron Douglas (American, 1889-1979) whose famous mural series "Aspects of Negro Life" (1936) are still on view at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, New York City. A gorgeous landscape painting created by a talented American artist. Custom wood frame. Size: painting itself measures ~ 30.25" L x 36" W (76.8 cm x 91.4 cm); 31" L x 37.125" W (78.7 cm x 94.3 cm) framed Mr. Hagman is best known for establishing the Chicago Printmaker's Workshop in 1969 following his studies in the city. A few years later he sold the studio in order to devote more time to his own artwork. He has exhibited at numerous American galleries including Studio 22 Gallery in Chicago and Lioga Duncan Gallery in New York as well as exhibitions such as the Phoenix National Group Show. In addition, several of his works reside in the Smithsonian American Art Museum Renwick Gallery. On the verso of the painting is a vita signed by the artist which reads, "Mr. Hagman is presently the Assistant Chairman of the Arts & Graphics Department of Columbia College, Chicago, where he also teaches Advanced Life Drawing and Advanced Printmaking. He has taught at Columbia College for the last four years and has been very instrumental in the development of the Arts & Graphics Department there. Mr. Hagman studied at the University of Louisville and at the Institute of Design at I.I.T. In 1968 he opened the Chicago Printmakers' Workshop after having worked and studied under Bronislav Bak at Studio 22 in Chicago. He owned and operated the print workshop and taught there for 3 years before selling it because of other responsibilities. His drawings, prints, and paintings have been shown in exhibitions and private collections throughout the country. Mr. Hagman presently divides his time between Columbia College, his studio in Chicago, and his secluded studio in Northern Indiana." Provenance: private New York, USA collection; certificate of authenticity from Merrill Chase indicates that this is an original painting entitled "Path to Home" All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
