      Philip B. Hahs (PA, 1853-1882) oil on board grisaille painting, 1881, depicting an African American child holding a duster and smiling mischievously at a partially nude marble bust that stands to his right. A cello lies on the floor to his left. Signed and dated Philip B. Hahs, 1881, lower left. Housed in a molded, ebonized wood frame. Sight: 15 1/2" H x 11" W. Frame: 23 1/2" H x 19" W. Note: This painting was likely the source for the wood engraving featured in the November 14, 1882 edition of Harper's Young People, p. 25, entitled "A Flirtation" and signed by Hahs.

      Philip B. Hahs (PA, 1853-1882) O/C painting, "On the Delaware," 1875. Depicts an artist viewed from behind while sketching a scenic Delaware Water Gap vista in the Appalachian mountains along the Delaware River. To his left is a wooded area from which a canopy of branches reaches across the canvas into the cloudy sky at upper right. Likely set near the border of New Jersey and the artist's home state of Pennsylvania. Signed and dated "Hahs 75," lower left, and inscribed en verso "'On the Delaware' near the Water Gap / Hahs, 75." With New Jersey State Museum and State University of New York, Binghamton, exhibition label affixed to back of frame. Housed in a gilt carved frame with nameplate. Sight: 13 1/2" H x 11 1/2" W. Frame: 21" H x 19" W. Exhibition History: New Jersey State Museum and SUNY Binghamton, "19th Century Painters of the Delaware Valley," 1/21-2/13/83 and 3/12-4/24/83.       On the Delaware Near the Water Gap.

      This lot consists of a landscape painting entitled, "On the Delaware Near the Water Gap," by Philip B. Hahs in 1875, as noted by the didactic on the verso. Hans has depicted a lovely little area on the Delaware where one is able to see rolling mountains in the distance with a beautiful sky farther back. In the foreground there is a figure that stands along the edge of the road, covered in shade by the tree to the left of the image. As noted on the didactic on the verso, this piece was exhibited in the New Jersey State Museum for the exhibit entitled "19th Century Painters of the Delaware Valley." The painting is framed in an ornately carved gild wooden frame. On the bottom of the frame, there is a plaque noting, "Philip B. Hahs 1853-1882." Overall the lot is in good condition with normal wear present. Wear is present on the frame with areas deficient of gilding and wood along with craquelure on the canvas.Condition: (Very Good).Dimensions: Framed: 20-1/2" x 19".
