Bowen Aylesworth Haines (Canada, b.12/21/1857, d.?) Winter Forest Scene O/C Painting

      Est: $250 - $500

Bowen Aylesworth Haines born in Canada in 1858.  A noted artist in the Hilton, New York  area in the 1920's, he built the famous Octagon Cottage arts and crafts house near the Bogus Point Light House in Parma, New York, a small suburb of Rochester. Light house is on Lake Ontario.  The artist was noted as having painted in New York and Canada. He was a member/exhibitor with the Rochester Art Club and the Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, New York. Born in Canada, in 1880 he was listed as painter in Portage, Pennsylvania. 1900 he was married and living in Parma, New York. 1905 Resident of Rochester, NY, Artist. 1910 artist for local newspaper and living in Parma. Perhaps the most unique architecture in Parma is the Octagon Cottage on Bogus Point at Lighthouse Beach. Built by a local artist, B. Aylesworth Haines, it is the only octagon cottage on the south shore of Lake Ontario. (One other stands on the North shore.) A historic 97 foot high red brick lighthouse occupied the point called "bogus", so called because rumor held that counterfeit (bogus) money was smuggled back and forth from Canada, hidden away in a secret cave in a nearby barn. An attempt to recreate the light tower has radically changed its statuesque appearance of 1895 when Inspector Charles Gridley approved it for use as the brightest light on Lake Ontario.
