      Est: CHF40,000 - CHF60,000

JAN HALA (Blatnà 1890–1959 Važec) Uspávanka v poli (Lullaby in the field). 1941. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left: J. Hala 41. 85 × 95 cm. Provenance: Swiss private collection, received by descent and owned by the same family for more than 40 years. Jan Hala was born in 1890 in what is now the Czech Republic. He studied philosophy and art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. In 1923 Hala set off on travels through the rural areas of Slovakia, where he visited the village of Važec in the High Tatras. He decided to settle there and stayed until his death in 1959. Previously focused on landscapes and social issues, Hala then focused on the local land, the nature and the people. He was especially fascinated by Czech and Slovak folklore. Around 1930 Hala found his style. He portrayed the everyday lives of the people of Važec, often exploring motifs of women at work, brides, folk festivals and mothers with their children. Produced in 1941, the present painting also belongs to this creative phase of the artist. The sitter is wrapped in the typical folk costume. Sitting on a white blanket in the grass with a baby in a basket and a parasol, she enjoys the summer day in the country. The easily accessible motifs on which Hala concentrated are very popular with the general public and his works are today located in museums such as the Slovak National Museum.

      GIRL IN FOLK COSTUME

      Est: -

Jan Hála studied at Ferdinand Engelmüller’s private painting school and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Professors |Vlaho Bukovac and Maximilián Pirner in 1910–1915. In 1923 he permanently settled in the village of Važec in the foothills of the Tatra Mountains, which was an inexhaustible source of inspiration for him. Although he was Czech, Hála joined the Slovak Modernism movement, which was represented by Benka, Bazovský, Fulla and others. In 1925 he became a member of the Union of Slovak Visual Artists. In addition to painting, he also wrote and illustrated books and is one of the founders of modern Slovak illustration for children. Figurative motifs, often interpreted as ethnographic studies, initially dominated | his work| a large part of his work as a painter was devoted to documenting Slovak folklore. This is also the case in this painting, in which he portrays a young woman in a brightly colored folk costume standing by the window in a traditional village interior. Hála’s painterly execution uniquely works with light and color to achieve an inimitable, at times expressively relaxed style. The acclaimed oeuvre of Jan Hála was exhibited abroad during his lifetime (in New York and at the Venice Biennale).
