      Girard Van Barkaloo Hale (1886-1958) American, Oil on Canvas. Signed bottom right. Depicts elegant woman, sitting. Overall size: 29 X 20 in. Sight size: 25 X 21 1/2 in. #1481 . Born in Denver, Colorado in 1886, Girard Van Barkaloo Hale studied at the Art Students League in New York and at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. His career was interrupted by World War I, in which he served with the Ambulance Corps of the American Field Service and won the Croix de Guerre with two citations. After returning from France, he established a studio in San Francisco and during the 1930s had homes in Santa Barbara and Atascadero. After World War II he returned to France and lived for many years in the village of Maille. Hale died in New York City in 1958. Early in his career he concentrated on portraits, such as this one, but later turned to landscapes and nocturnes.
