Charcoal on paper. 29 1/8 x 23 in. This large charcoal is a tender portrait of a young boy. Its sketchlike quality gives the work an intimate flair, while the velvety, matte texture of the charcoal contributes rich detail to the boy’s face. Hale was best known for expressing her sitters’ character – particularly the children she depicted. Without a background or details on the subject’s clothes, the viewer can truly focus on the boy’s face and the texture of his hair. The boy’s innocent, playful expression, combined with his slight slouch, gives the work an air of playfulness and energy. The work is in good condition with slight creases and light mat stains around the border. There is a sketch of a woman or girl’s face on the back of the drawing. The ornate period frame and two-color mat are in excellent condition.

Attr. Lilian Hale (1880 - 1963) Portrait of a young woman in a kimono. Possibly Agnes Dogget. Oil on canvas laid on board. Sight Size: 29 x 23 in. Overall Size: 35 x 29.25 in. Unsigned. Hale attended the Hartford Art School in Connecticut where her talents were noticed by William Merritt Chase, one of the country's renowned Impressionists, who proved to be her major influence. She attended Chase's summer school at Shinnecock, Long Island, and in 1900, having earned a scholarship from the Hartford Art Society, she began classes at the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts*. She was a student of Edmund Tarbell and Philip Leslie Hale, whom she married in 1902. After graduating from the Museum School in 1904 and a trip to Europe, she began annual exhibitions in Boston and received wide acclaim for the beauty of her figure and still life paintings and the quality of their draftsmanship and drawing. The birth of her daughter, Anna Westcott Hale, in 1908 caused her to give up her Boston Fenway Studio where she had worked with leading artists including Frank Benson, Joseph De Camp, her husband, and sometimes John Singer Sargent. In 1910, she won the Bronze Medal at the Buenos Aires Exposition and the Gold Medal at the Pan-Pacific Exposition in 1915. She continued to exhibit widely, and in the 1920s gained the attention of Duncan Phillips, a major patron of the arts who created The Phillips Museum in Washington D.C. She also gained many portrait clients and was elected a member of the National Association of Portrait Painters*. In 1927, she won the prestigious Altman Prize* at the National Academy of Design* for her Portrait of Taylor Hardin. The situation was unusual in two respects-- she was the first woman to win that prize, and the portrait was one of her few male subjects.

She found her model for this image while riding the Boston subway (as noted in the 1992 dissertation on Hale by Erica Eve Hirshler). Dressing her subject in a stylish ball gown and fancy jewelry, Hale captured the essence of the poise and gentility of the "Boston lady." Yet the sitter's pensive quality and the sense of mystery associated with the box she holds absently and gingerly suggests an inner life at divergence with her appearance. (no. 60) Hale was as well known for her drawing as she was for her painting. In the former, she developed a precise and delicate linearity, often depicting women in states of quiet reverie. Her painstaking method in charcoal involved sharpening crayons with razor blades in order to draw lines in varying thicknesses and densities. Taking a cue in this work from the Divisionist paintings of her husband, artist and critic Philip Leslie Hale, she created a sensitive image of her subject, who emerges from an atmospheric background into the light, her pensive expression conveying dreamy remembrance. The drawing perhaps relates to the 1908 song by Frederick Hall entitled: "A Rose of Yesterday (A Reminiscence)," whose lyrics begin: "a rose of someone's yesterday, that fell from out a dusty book was by someone laid away to lie in some forgotten nook . . ." A mother stands at the center of the subtly lit room, filled with rich colors and fabrics, her arm around her daughter and reading a book to her. All the things she will need for her future surround the young girl: art, literature, geography and music. This work is a wonderful example of the women painters in the Boston School and why they are so highly regarded. Ms. Erica Hirschler writes about the paintings of the Boston School women artists, "The subjects the women painted during the early years of the twentieth century in Boston were remarkably similar to those of the men...While women were commissioned far more often to paint likenesses of women than they were of men, and many women artists were considered natural choices to create images of children, the way they crafted their paintings, the types of objects they chose to include, and the style in which they applied paint to canvas differ little from those of men."
