His diary reads as follows,  'February 13, 1965 Sunday.  I took some paintings Hardy had asked for to the Mercury Gallery yesterday morning. Today I painted a gouache from the sketch I did of Jean last Tuesday and yesterday I painted one of the maid, also from the drawing of last Tuesday. They make a good pair and should not be separated. Anyway, they will probably stay with me for a long time.'  With thanks to the Clifford Hall Estate for their assistance with the cataloguing of this work.

        Clifford Hall RBA ROI,  British 1904-1973 -  View from the Circus Ring, c.1930s;  pencil and coloured pencil on paper, 31.6 x 22.3 cm: together with 4 other works on paper by the same artist, of a similar size, medium and subject (unframed) (5) (ARR)  Note:  each work bears an inscription in pencil on the reverse; on the first work this is 'PW 1710 N 1950 C. Hall View from Circus Ring M F 6 2-3-88'.  The 3rd work in this lot is a ballet scene, likely done in the late 30s or 40s. The two bather sketches are likely from the 1970s and are ideas for paintings never completed - the last work in the lot is a reimagining of 'The Dying Sun' made in the mid to late 1940s.  With thanks to the Clifford Hall Estate for their assistance with the cataloguing of this work.

        Clifford Hall ROI NS, British 1904-1973 - Sadler’s Wells ballet, 1947; pencil on paper, signed, titled and dated lower right 'Clifford Hall 1947 Sadler's Wells', 21.2 x 28.6 cm (ARR) Provenance: with Grant Fine Art, Newcastle, Northern Ireland Note: this sketch was likely used as source material by the artist for a painting entitled 'Dress Rehearsal - Mardi Gras No 15', once owned by Miss L. Browse of Rowland, Browse & Delbanco. The ballet 'Mardi Gras' was choreographed by Andree Howard to an original score by Leonard Salzedo with the production’s sets and costumes designed by Hugh Stevenson for Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet and first performed on 26th November 1946. According to the artist's family, it is possible this sketch was made earlier and Hall misremembered when dating it later.

        Clifford Hall (1904-1973) RUE DU PAVÉ NEUF, MORET-SUR-LOING, 1949 oil on canvas signed lower right; titled and dated on reverse h:24  w:26.50 in. After graduating from the RA Schools in 1927 where he studied Painting and Drawing; Walter Sickert being his most influential instructor, Hall travelled to Paris, studying briefly with André Lhote at his studio near the Gare Montparnasse. Early solo exhibitions from 1929 to the mid 1930s were held at The St. Martin's Gallery, The Leger Gallery and Beaux Art Gallery in London. Hall was known for urban scenes as well as portraiture, having 'How To Paint Portraits' by Clifford Hall published in 1932. He had numerous solo exhibitions in London throughout his career and exhibited across the UK and as far afield as Australia. We are grateful to the estate of Clifford Hall for their kind assistance in cataloguing this lot.
