This is one of five official posters for these winter games, all of which were published by the PLM Railway, rather than by the Olympic Committee. ALO (CHARLES HALLO, 1882-1969) SUMMER ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA / BY THE BLUE TRAIN. Circa 1928. 39x25 1/4 inches, 99x64 1/4 cm. L. Serre & Cie., Paris. Condition A: minor creases in margins. At the turn-of-the-century, the Côte d'Azur was primarily a winter destination. After the First World War, when tourism began to pick up again around Europe, new promoters began to tout it as a summer destination as well. The Train Bleu "was the first train to be entirely made of all-steel cars. The 'Blue Train' [so-called because of its dark blue sleeping cars] was very popular and a great success all at once" (Wagons Lits, p. 290). Very few of Alo's posters depict people, yet here he wonderfully illustrates a populated beach in an Art Deco style worthy of Roger Broders. It is also his only poster to depict a train (seen here on the Anthéor Viaduct). The logo in the top left corner is C.I.W.L., which stands for Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. Alo 131, Wagons-Lits 161, Train 131, Azur 9.

Alo (Charles Hallo, 1884-1969). LA BAULE / LA PLAGE DU SOLEIL. 1931.

        Est: $800 - $1,200

ALO (CHARLES HALLO, 1884-1969) LA BAULE / LA PLAGE DU SOLEIL. 1931. 39x24 3/4 inches, 99x62 3/4 cm. Lucien Serre, Paris. Condition A-: minor water stains at bottom edge; minor creases along vertical and horizontal folds. Charles Hallo, born in Lille, was a painter, illustrator, engraver and photographer. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, and joined the military in 1914, where he picked up photography, and eventually became a lieutenant. After the war, Alo became best known for creating over 100 landscape posters for railway and marine companies, including PLM, Chemins de Fer and the Red Star Line. La Baule, in Brittany, is primarily known for its beach, but Alo focuses on the bay (considered one of the most beautiful in the world), depicting only a hint of the shoreline in the distance.

Alo (Charles Hallo, 1882-1969). SUMMER ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA / BY THE BLUE TRAIN. 1922.

        Est: $1,200 - $1,800

ALO (CHARLES HALLO, 1882-1969) SUMMER ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA / BY THE BLUE TRAIN. 1922. 38 1/4x24 1/4 inches, 97x61 1/2 cm. [Lucien Serre, Paris.] Condition B+: repaired tear in upper left corner; black overpainting at bottom margin; margins trimmed. The logo in the top left corner is C.I.W.L., which stands for Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. Wagons-Lits 161, Train 131, Azur 9.

Condition B+: overpainting and airbrushing in margins; minor crease in lower text; punch holes in right margin. In 1924, the Eighth Olympic games were held in Chamonix. One year later, "these successful Games were retrospectively recognized at the [International Olympic Committee] Congress in Prague as the first Olympic Winter Games" (Olympics p. 35). The decision to hold these winter games came in 1921, and "triggered a period of frenzied construction as rail and road links and hotel development opened up the area to international tourism" (Ibid p. 33). This is one of five official posters for these winter games, all of which were published by the PLM Railway, rather than by the Olympic Committee. They were all issued with text variants, sometimes promoting the Olympic Games and sometimes just promoting winter activities in the area itself. A variation of this image exists with the additional text "Sports D''Hiver à l''Occasion de la VIIIe Olympiade / 25 Janvier-5 Fevrier 1924."
