Pekka Halonen (Finnish, 1865-1933) Kevätaurinko purolla (Spring sun on the stream), 1918 Oil on board 17-3/4 x 14-1/2 inches (45.1 x 36.8 cm) Signed and dated lower left: P. Halonen / 1918 PROVENANCE: Bukowskis, Helsinki, December 14, 2016, lot 817930; Private collection, Ridgway, Colorado, acquired from the above. Pekka Halonen was a seminal figure in the history of Finnish landscape painting. The son of a farmer who dabbled as an amateur painter of church interiors, Pekka lived close to the land and had a keen understanding of its shape and seasons. First introduced to painting by his father, he later pursued formal academic study for four years at the Art Society's Drawing School in Helsinki. Upon graduation, he won a scholarship to study abroad, travelling to Paris in 1890, where he studied initially at the Académie Julian and then under Paul Gauguin, where the combination of his interest in Symbolism and Gauguin's decorative Synthetism made a deep impression on his work. These influences are apparent in the present depiction of a frozen stream beginning to thaw in early spring, most notably in its tipped-up perspective, flat patterning, and high horizon line. In 1896, the artist travelled to Florence, Siena, Rome, and Naples to study early Renaissance art. Four years later, he created two works for the Finnish Pavilion at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, a profound honor that reflected the great progress of his career. During Czar Nicholas II's "Russification" of Finland in the early twentieth century, by means of conscripting Finnish men into the Russian army and imposing Russian as the official language, Pekka Halonen strove to foster a sense of national pride through symbolic interpretations of the Finnish landscape, which were consistently serene. He once stated, "Art should not jar the nerves like sandpaper – it should produce a feeling of peace." HID01801242017

      Est: €18,500 - €20,350

1916. 97 cm x 80 cm. Rahmen. Lit.: Thieme-Becker, Bd. XV, S. 528; O. Okkonen, Die Finnische Kunst, Berlin 1943.
