Frame size: 30 3/4 in. x 35 1/4 in. br>Exhibition History: Bold Expressions: The Collection of Lorlee and Arnold Tenenbaum, Jepson Center, Telfair Museums, Savannah, Georgia, March 10-July 9, 2023. Phillip Jewel Hampton was an artist and educator from Missouri. Hampton studied at Citrus Junior College, Kansas State University and Drake University before completing his BA at the Kansas City Art Institute. The WWII veteran then completed his master's degree in 1952, making him the first African American person to receive a master's in art in the state of Missouri. He worked as an artist for a Kansas City newspaper before moving to Savannah, Georgia, where he taught at Savannah State College. He later taught at Southern Illinois University. Measurements: Height: by sight, 22 3/8 in. x Width: 27 5/8 in. Condition: Overall good condition, toning, particularly at top edge likely from mounting tape, some areas of surface staining, not viewed out of frame, light wear to frame.       PHILLIP JEWEL HAMPTON (1922 - 2016) Sea Barns. Watercolor on wove paper, 1968. 533x736 mm; 21x29 inches. Signed and dated in ink, lower right recto. Signed, dated, and inscribed "Sea Barns" and "taken from Thunderbolt, Ga" in ink, upper right verso. Provenance: private collection, South Carolina. This large watercolor is a beautiful example of this Phillip Jewel Hampton's landscapes. From the early stages of his artistic and teaching career in Savannah, Hampton recorded his surroundings, rendering the sites of the coastal city and its neighboring towns in watercolor, echoing predecessors such as Henry Ossawa Tanner, Edward Bannister and Hale Woodruff. He continued to paint watercolor landscapes throught the 1960s with increasing elements of abstraction.

      PHILLIP JEWEL HAMPTON (1922 - 2016) Untitled (Woman Covering Her Head). Mixed media on masonite board, including string collage, 1953. 1219x902 mm; 48x35 1/2 inches. Signed and dated in acrylic, lower right. Provenance: private collection, Illinois. This striking modernist painting is a large and scarce, early work by this artist. Born 1922 in Kansas City, Missouri, Phillip Jewel Hampton was an artist and educator whose practice was inspired by the traditions of the Old Masters and the progressiveness of social realism. In 1943 he was drafted through selective service into the U. S. Army and served two years in World War II. Hampton eventually received a BFA in illustration from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1951 and an MFA in 1952. That year Hampton joined the teaching staff of the Savannah State University to build an art and design program, and by the mid-1950s, his work shifted to abstraction. Hampton's long career as an educator culminated with his retirement from Southern Illinois University in 1992, after which he was honored with the title Professor Emeritus. Lahs-Gonzales pp: 2-5.

Born in 1922 in Kansas City, Missouri, Phillip Hampton studied art at the Kansas City Art Institute. Throughout his career, he inspired, not only with his art, but with his teaching.
