JOHANNES HANDSCHIN (1899-1948) VILLARS / SUISSE. 1934. 35¾x25¾ inches, 90¾x65½ cm. Wassermann, Basel. Condition A-: minor abrasions and pin holes in margins; minor creases along horizontal fold through lower text; colors slightly attenuated. Alpine vistas, smiles, couture and sporting possibilities are all encapsulated in this stylized image promoting Villars, a Swiss village in the Vaud canton. Here, the summer activities of tennis, swimming and golf are represented. Handschin also designed a winter poster for the same resort featuring a skier. One of two variations of this image, the other bearing text for the Palace Hotel.

Condition A-: expertly-repaired tears and creases at right edge; restoration in upper right corner. Mounted on Japan. Framed. Johannes (Hans) Handschin was a leader of the Basel graphic art movement in Switzerland. Inspired by both the object posters of Stoecklin, and the Art Deco aesthetic, he produced both airbrush-style posters - like this image for the Grand Prix in the Montreux, and hyper-realist depictions of Swiss-manufactured products. The race was held five times between 1924 and 1937. Poetics fig. 4.7.

This graphic tour de force advertises the Basel-based architect, A. Gasser. In addition to being able to create the perfect edifice to suit any client's needs, he also served as a real estate agent with properties available for purchase or rental. Little is known about Handschin other than that he was a painter and graphic artist active in Basel. Rare! (Art Deco; German & Swiss)

In 1925, he was inspired by the work of Niklaus Stoecklin, who created images of the Machine Age that were airbrushed and "perfect." Thus, this great light bulb, "the proven product of the oldest Swiss incandescent lamp factory." (Art Deco; Lighting)
