Nick Eggenhofer (German-American, 1897-1985) Wagons, Mules and Men, Hastings House, New York. 1961. Original color painting of horse drawn coach on front endsheets. Both sheets measure 9.75 in. x 14.375 in. Book measures in slipcase 10.25 in. x 8 in. x 1.25 in. From a non-smoking home and free of any odors. Provenance: Bob Borcherdt collection. Bigfork, Montana. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as grading can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. Blantyre, Nyassaland (Rhodesia). 1959. Vintage ferrotyped gelatin silver print on Agfa paper. 28,5 x 19,5 cm. Photographer's agency stamp and annotated in pencil on the verso. In 1959 a state of emergency prevailed throughout Rhodesia and Nyassaland after Dr. Hastings Banda (ANC) demanded more rights for the African majority and gained an increasing number of followers. As a result the governor forbid the ANC and Banda's followers were brought to concentration camps such as the one shown in the image offered here. - Some buckling, some matt areas, otherwise in good condition.

British School, late 16th Century Edward Hastings, Baron Hastings of Loughborough (1512/15-1572) Inscribed variously verso Oil on cradled panel 35 x 27 inches Provenance: Newhouse Galleries, circa 1960's Exhibitions: National Portrait Gallery, 1866 Other Notes: Edward Hastings, Baron Hastings of Loughborough (1512/15-1572) served as a privy to Queen Mary I. He was elected to the Order of the Garter in 1555, and is pictured here wearing the Order's collar around his neck. The inscription surrounding his coat of arms, "Honi soit qui mal y pense" refers to the Order's motto. This picture was exhibited at the First Special Exhibition of National Portraits in April 1866 at the South Kensington Museum in London, England, which was organized to display portraits of significant people in the history of England.

Nick Eggenhofer Wagons, Mules and Men with Original Illustration, New York (NY): Hastings House Publishers, 1961. 8vo, cloth boards, 184 pp. Includes original signed watercolor by author on FFEP, copy number 198 out of 215 special edition copies. A detailed, comprehensive volume on pack animals, wagons, carts, and stagecoaches used to transport people on the western frontier. Nick Eggenhofer (1897-1985) was a German born artist who developed an interest in the American West after being exposed to Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and popular literature of the West that circulated throughout Germany. In 1913, he immigrated to New York City and began taking classes to become a commercial artist and illustrator. Following an inspirational journey out west, Eggenhofer began doing illustrations for many Western books and magazines, and he eventually went on to write and illustrate Wagons, Mules and Men. In the 1960s, Eggenhofer moved to Cody, Wyoming, and remained there until his death. His works are held by the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and many important private collections.
