    Jack Hastings Modernist Bird Bath Sculpture

    Jack Hastings (Tennessee, 1925-2013) modernist carved cement birdbath sculpture. Constructed in two pieces with hole in center for possible conversion to fountain. Sunburst style carving to interior basin, with projecting double scroll design at center of each side repeated on the reeded, squared base. Pedestal base - 17 1/2"H x 14" square; top - 8 1/2" H x 21" square. Weight - approx. 200 lbs. Provenance: Private Nashville collection, Commissioned by consignors directly from the artist circa 1976. Biography: Jack Hastings studied art with Conrad Albrizio at Louisiana State University and worked with Diego Rivera while studying at the Escuela de Pintura y Escultura in Mexico City. He moved to Italy for a time in the late 1950s where he cast bronze sculpture. Hastings hd solo exhibitions and installed sculptures in New York City, and created public artworks in cities like New Orleans, where he also helped found the Orleans Gallery. He settled in rural Middle Tennessee in 1972. His forte was large sculptures in bronze, steel and cement, and his major commissions included a massive mobile, "Homage to Alexander Calder" for the TVA Headquarters in Chattanooga and the Thomy Lafon School playground sculpture in New Orleans, now in the collection of the Smithsonian Art Museums. A joint exhibition of the work of Hastings and his life partner Arlyn Ende was held in 2012 at Tinney Contemporary Gallery in Nashville, the year before his death.
