  • Kawase Hasui "Night At The Pond" Woodblock Print
    Apr. 23, 2025

Kawase Hasui "Night At The Pond" Woodblock Print

    Est: $800 - $1,200

Image: 10 1/4" x 15" Condition: overall in very good condition, vibrant colors.  NOTE: We had to peel back the matting to lift the piece off the page, so it will no longer be matted. The artwork is hinged to the backing board, which we chose to leave as is—that’s why the image appears curved in the back photo. Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was a renowned Japanese printmaker and painter associated with the Shin-Hanga (“new prints”) movement. Celebrated for his atmospheric landscapes and scenes of traditional Japan, Hasui's woodblock prints often depict tranquil temples, snowy villages, and coastal views with delicate color gradations and fine detail. A student of Kaburagi Kiyokata, he collaborated extensively with publisher Shōzaburō Watanabe, helping to revitalize Japanese printmaking in the 20th century. In 1956, Hasui was named a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government for his contribution to the arts.
