Michael Haubtmann was a German landscape painter, a pupil of Max Haushofer. He studied law, but gave up the profession in 1869 and moved to Munich. He made his living as a landscape painter. His works can be seen mainly in Central Europe, especially in Germany and Austria. He became a master of Romantic landscape painting and, together with Julius Mařák, was judged by the press to be above the level of the contemporary art market. The landscape with the alpine lake reveals his love for landscapes interwoven with water, which he painted constantly. His work with composition - especially his choice of the stagy architecture of the church obscured by trees and the soft golden light in the landscape bravuraly completes the atmosphere of the whole situation. Verso on the back of the frame two contemporary labels of the gilding supplies shop Konrad Barsk, Munich. H 33,5, W 65 cm (support). Elaborate frame. After abandoning a career as a lawyer, Michael Haubtmann, who was originally from Prague, moved to the aspiring painter's metropolis of Munich in 1875. There, as a pupil of Julius Lange (1817 - 1878), he discovered and expanded his skills in landscape painting, which he demonstrated on extensive travels. On his excursions he explored canonical sites of the classical Grand Tour, such as the aqueducts of the Roman Campagna or the ancient theatre in Taormina, as well as Egyptian temples and pyramids, but also Swiss mountain lakes or rugged rocky coasts in Greece. Away from his Mediterranean expeditions, adventurous forays took him to lonely fjord landscapes in Norway, whose mystically transfigured, suggestive twilight he masterfully captured in numerous works. Den aus Prag stammenden Michael Haubtmann zog es, nachdem er eine Laufbahn als Jurist abgebrochen hatte, 1875 in die aufstrebende Malermetropole München. Dort entdeckte und erweiterte er als Schüler von Julius Lange (1817 - 1878) seine Fähigkeiten im Fach der Landschaftsmalerei, die er auf ausgedehnten Reisen unter Beweis stellte. Auf seinen Exkursionen erkundete er sowohl kanonische Anlaufstellen der klassischen Grand Tour, wie die Aquädukte der römischen Campagna oder das antike Theater in Taormina, als auch ägyptische Tempel und Pyramiden, aber auch Schweizer Bergseen oder zerklüftete Felsenküsten in Griechenland. Abseits von seinen mediterranen Expeditionen führten ihn abenteuerliche Streifzüge in einsame Fjordlandschaften Norwegens, deren mystisch verklärtes, suggestives Zwielicht er in zahlreichen Werken meisterhaft festhielt.

Michael Hauptmann, 1840 Prag - 1921 München ITALIENISCHE LANDSCHAFT MIT RUINEN Öl auf Leinwand. 103 x 140 cm. Rechts unten signiert "MHauptmann". Gerahmt. Von einem erhöht gelegenen Standpunkt aus schweift der Blick über Ruinen verschiedener antiker Gebäude und anschließend über die weite Bucht von Neapel. Zwischen den Resten antiker Säulen und Mauern ist ein Schafhirte mit seinen Tieren dargestellt. Die rundbogigen Öffnungen der Mauern erzeugen interessante Durchblicke und geben die Sicht auf das Meer und die Küste frei. Die Ruinen lassen sogleich an die großen römischen Städte der Region wie Paestum oder Herculaneum denken. Im rechten Hintergrund ist der Vesuv mit schneebedecktem, rauchendem Gipfel zu sehen. Zwischen Ruinen und Gipfel liegt eine Stadt hoch über den Felsen am Meer. Das von links und damit von Westen einfallende Licht bescheint die Küste und färbt den Horizont leicht Abendrot.
