Provenance: Dr. Gary Noel Ross; Paula Manship (1912-2006), Baton Rouge, LA; by descent to her niece Nadine Carter Russell (1943-2022), Baton Rouge, LA. Note: Frank Hayden studied at Xavier University and under the great Croatian artist Ivan Meštrović at the University of Notre Dame. His work is located on university campuses, in houses of worship and as part of numerous public and private collections. Religious motifs are prominent in Hayden’s work, and he depicted both the individual search for betterment through faith and the societal search for enlightenment and unity. The lot offered here displays the simplistic yet refined forms of the talented artist. The figurative elements are stylized to the point of abstraction, exemplifying the tenets of simplicity of form. The contrasting media of stone and wood echo the tension of the subject even as they are seamlessly melded together. With “Jacob Wrestling,” Hayden illustrates a story in the life of Jacob, detailed in Genesis, where separated from all others and from his own worldly possessions, he grapples throughout the night for what is truly important. Following an exhausting struggle with God that leaves him crippled, Jacob ceases fighting, realizing that he could not proceed without God and ultimately receives his blessing. The story is one of faith, redemption from sin, fulfillment of one’s purpose and sacrifice—universal themes across all religions and time periods. Frank Hayden (American/Louisiana, 1934-1988), "Sage", 1989-90, mixed media diptych on plywood, signed and titled on both panels en verso, dated on right panel en verso, overall 71 3/4 in. x 72 in., unframed. (2 pcs.). Provenance: Arthur Roger Gallery, New Orleans. Note: Baton Rouge-based artist Frank Hayden learned that finding the emotion in his work was the key to success from his mentor, Ivan Meštrovi?, the great Croatian sculptor. Hayden combined European Modernism and African Tribal influences, always staying rooted in the human body as his subject. Utilizing many different materials to craft his works (clay, fiberglass, wood, stone, plaster and canvas), he always reflected a deep spiritual and humanist concern. The work offered here, “Sage,” exemplifies this element beautifully, revealing the thoughtful face of a man in deep meditation. The work seems to personify Hayden himself as he commented on his art: "My art does not recognize a hierarchy of ideas and materials. It simply saturates existence into a significant form. That form has been achieved through long and difficult reflection or drawn from the possibilities and concerns of the moment. In either case, the prospect of beauty is constant and is all that is needed to guide my hand and heart." Ref.: Green, Don M. “The Legend of Frank Hayden.” Views from Southern University. Note: Frank Hayden is one of Louisiana's preeminent sculptors. He is best known for his public commissions, many of which may be found in churches, synagogues, and banks throughout Baton Rouge. Hayden was a native of Memphis, TN, and completed his undergraduate studies at Xavier University in New Orleans; he continued at Notre Dame, where he studied with sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. He was also a recipient of the prestigious Fulbright scholarship. Hayden moved to Baton Rouge in September 1961 and was on the faculty at Southern from that time until he was named Southern's first Distinguished Professor in 1986 Hayden's sculptures, made of wood, plaster, fibergla s, or stone, reflect deep spiritual and humanistic concerns including fellowship, family, Christian values, war, and civil rights. Although primarily figurative, his sculptural forms are stylized and often abstracted, and their surfaces are sometimes inscribed with words. Hayden's work does not often appear for sale in the marketplace. About his art, Hayden said, "My art does not recognize a hierarchy of ideas and materials. It simply saturates existence into a significant form. That form has been achieved through long and difficult reflection or drawn from the possibilities and concerns of the moment.
