    Oct. 04, 2020

Palmer Hayden (NY, 1890 - 1973) "Baltimore Street" Watercolor

    Est: $20,000 - $30,000

Palmer Cole (Hedgeman) Hayden (VA, NY, 1890 - 1973) "Baltimore Street" Watercolor. Signed lower right. Provenance: Private Florida collection. Hayden was born Peyton Cole Hedgeman in a small Virginia town roughly fifty miles southwest of Washington, DC. After moving to DC at age sixteen to live with an aunt, he took a job as a general laborer for the circus. In 1912 he enlisted in the military, but due to a mistaken reference letter, he was registered as Palmer Cole Hayden, a name he adopted as his own. By 1920 he had left the military, and he began to study painting—in New York City with Cooper Union art instructor Victor Perard and later in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, at the Commonwealth Art Colony. When Hayden traveled to Paris in 1927, his painting focus changed from seascapes to genre scenes of the thriving African diaspora in the French metropolis. Stylistically, he developed a more abstract approach that flattened the pictorial field and represented the human figure in ways that at times uneasily paralleled stereotypical portrayals of African Americans in popular culture. Sight Size: 20.75 x 28.75 in. Overall Size: 29.5 x 37.5 in. Framed behind glass.

PALMER HAYDEN (1890 - 1973) Le Thonier à Basse Marée Concarneau.

    Est: $20,000 - $30,000

PALMER HAYDEN (1890 - 1973) Le Thonier à Basse Marée Concarneau. Oil on linen canvas, circa 1927-30. 552x457 mm; 21 3/4x18 inches. Signed in oil, lower left recto. Titled and dedicated "With fondest regards to The Harold Neals from the artist" in oil, verso. Provenance: gift from the artist; Mr. and Mrs. Harold M. Neal, Pittsburgh; Luise Ross Gallery, New York; private collection, Connecticut (1994). Harold M. Neal was an artist and educator who befriended Hayden while organizing exhibitions of African-American artists in Pittsburgh in the 1960s. This oil painting is a scarce, early oil painting of one of Palmer Hayden's favorite subjects. In the summer of 1927, Hayden produced a group of oil paintings, watercolors and sketches along the Brittany coast. Le Thonier à Basse Marée Concarneau was painted either during this trip or shortly after upon the artist's return to New York. Le Thonier is a tuna fishing boat - images of these boats at dock are found in several sketchbook drawings of boats from Concarneau in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Two years earlier, Hayden had painted seascapes of Boothbay Harbor and along the Maine coast, one of which had won the 1925 Harmon Foundation gold medal. With his prize money, he left for Paris and finally met his idol, Henry Ossawa Tanner. Hayden left Paris for the artist colony town of Concarneau that summer and briefly returned to what had given him his first success - seascapes. Feininger-Miller pp. 79-81.

PALMER HAYDEN (1890 - 1973) The Blue Nile.

    Est: $35,000 - $50,000

PALMER HAYDEN (1890 - 1973) The Blue Nile. Watercolor and gouache on thick wove paper, 1964. 546x673 mm; 21 1/2x26 1/2 inches. Signed and dated in watercolor, lower right. Provenance: the artist's wife, Miriam A. Hayden; Camille Billops, New York. Exhibited: Two Centuries of Black American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, September 30 - November 21, 1976, (traveling exhibition to the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, the Museum of Fine Arts, Dallas, and the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn.) Illustrated: Bearden, Romare and Harry B. Henderson, Jr., A History of African-American Artists, pl. xxvi; The African American Review. Department of English, Indiana State University, 1992, front cover. This wonderful watercolor is one of Palmer Hayden's most evocative paintings, particularly from the latter part of his career. With its image of a reclining African mother and child sleeping below the river scene, it has a dream-like quality. This aspect is described by Romare Bearden and Harry Henderson in their A History of African-American Artists: "Hayden was often inspired by dreams. This watercolor is a dream about black life on the Nile in the time of the pharaohs. Like much of his work, it expresses his slyly ironic sense of humor." Due to its inclusion in their book and in the 1976 landmark national exhibition Two Centuries of Black American Art organized by David C. Driskell, The Blue Nile is one of Hayden's best known paintings today - it also inspired a painting by Robert Colescott. Bearden/Henderson pl. xxvi.

Signed, titled and inscribed "65-97-121 1262" in oil, verso. Provenance: private collection, New York. The painting is inscribed with inventory numbering used by the Harmon Foundation. In 1926, he won a gold medal and first award from the Harmon Foundation for his nautical watercolor from Maine, The Schooners. With his prize money, he left for Paris, and finally met his idol Henry Ossawa Tanner. Hayden left Paris for the artist colony town of Concarneau that summer and briefly returned to seascapes. PALMER HAYDEN (1890 - 1973) Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Watercolor on cream wove paper, 1958. 432x559 mm; 17x22 inches. Signed and dated in watercolor, lower left. Provenance: private collection, New York; thence by descent to the current owner. Exhibited: Harlem Renaissance: Art of Black America. Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Brunswick, ME, September 24 - November 27, 1988, with the label on the frame back. In this watercolor, Palmer Hayden revisits a landscape where thirty years earlier he began his painting career. During the summers of 1925-1926, Palmer Hayden was lent the use of a cottage in Boothbay, Maine, and arranged to exchange labor for instruction, room and board at the Commonwealth Art Colony. He painted around Portland and Haverstraw on the weekends. He showed many of these first landscapes and marine studies in his first solo exhibition at the Civic Club, New York, in April of 1926. In December, his oil painting of Boothbay Harbor won the Harmon Foundation prize, beating out the other finalist Hale Woodruff, and ultimately gained him passage to Paris.
