        A Folk Art Carved and Painted Wood Frame 19th Century housing a lithograph of the Fulton ferry boat Over by George Hayward (English, active Brooklyn 1800-1872) for Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York, for the year 1859. unmarked. 11 1/2 x 13 inches. The Manual was compiled and published annually by David Thomas Valentine (American, 1801-1869) between 1841 and 1870 and served as a source for information about the city's municipal government. Valentine, described at the time as "our city's chronicler," served in various capacities, including Marine Court Clerk, Deputy Clerk of the Common Council, and Chief Clerk of the Council.

This panoramic view shows the North Battery on the Hudson River viewed from the end of Hubert Street. The North Battery, also known as the Red Fort, was built in 1808-10 and was one of several forts built at the time to help fortify the city against enemy attack. George Hayward was a New York City lithographer best known for his views and maps of New York City, including those published in D.T. Valentine's annual manuals for the city between 1841 and 1866. The manual was a directory with extensive historical and contemporary records related to New York, including ordinances, lists of public officials, ferry schedules, and the directories of hospitals and schools.
