      GERALD SINCLAIR HAYWARD (AMERICAN, 1845-1926) MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG BOY, watercolor, depicting sitter wearing a naval outfit, signed and dated lower margin "Gerald S Hayward 1893", engraved on the reverse of frame "Herman Livingston Jr. / born at Oak Hill / August 18, 1883". Housed in original frame with red-leather case monogrammed "H. L. Jr." 1893. 2" x 3" sight.  Catalogue Note: Gerald S. Hayward, was born in Ontario, Canada, he studied at the Royal Academy of Art, London from 1879-1883, then spent most of his professional career in New York.  Herman Thong Livingston, Jr. (1883-1951), was a longtime resident of New York, having spent some time with the military during World War I. He married Olga Tina Kobbe in 1909, and they had a daughter Alida in 1915. "Oak Hill", Linlithgo, New York, is a private estate that was built in 1793 and still resides in the Livingston family.

      The original 19th century hand painted miniature portrait signed Gerald S. Hayward 2/95 depicts a young girl in a late Victorian lace eyelet dress. The remainder of the collection includes an unsigned double portrait of mother and child circa 1935 along with three additional cased oval images displaying condition issues. Frames range from 4.25 x 3 to 6.25 x 4 inches. AN ABSENTEE BID PLACED IN ADVANCE COULD LOSE TO A LIVE BID OF EQUAL AMOUNT PLACED LATER. Hayward (Canada, 1845-1926) Portrait Miniature in 18K Pendant, watercolor on ivory, portrait of a young woman in white dress with flowers and beaded necklace, Signed 'Gerald Hayward 1904' inscribed verso 'By Gerald Sinclair Hayward / The Den / Larchmont Manor / New York / Winnipeg April / 1904.' Lock of hair inset in back of gold case (unmarked, tests as 18K gold, overall weight 59.25 dwt.). Provenance: Purchased from Elle Shushan Aug. 25, 2005 for $2,300. Frame size 4 3/8 in. x 3 1/8 in. An oval portrait miniature watercolor on bone depicting Karl Reilley, esquire, of Oswego, New York, in profile wearing white shirt, coat and tie presented in a conforming brass frame. Portrait is signed and dated lower right 'Gerald S Hayward 1898' . Sitter identified in inscription, likely by the artist, on the backside of case. Approximate oval height 3.75", width 2.6". Provenance: Purportedly purchased at Sothebys in Belgravia December 11, 1975.
