Three quarter length portrait made for John Henshaw in 1839 after a portrait of the early American patriot Joshua Henshaw by John Singleton Copley. Typed note on back of canvas.       Sarah (1736-1822), the daughter of merchant Joshua Henshaw, married her cousin Joseph Henshaw in 1758. The couple lived in Boston and later settled in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. All three had their portraits painted by Copley in the early 1770's; Joshua's a half-length portrait in oil, Sarah and Joseph's among Copley's rare pastel portraits. The Henshaw portraits were inherited by Sarah's namesake, Sarah Henshaw Hayward (1768-1849), whose son, Joshua Henshaw Hayward, painted this copy circa 1838. Oil on wood panel, 24 x 17 1/4 inches. The reverse affixed with old typewritten information on the sitter and her family.Note: The original Copley portrait of Sarah Henshaw is in the Bayou Bend Collection, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. An embroidered overmantel piece worked by Sarah Henshaw, "The Hanging of Absalom," is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
