Judge Jacob Burnet, U.S. Senator oil on canvas unsigned sight: 28 1/4 x 24 inches. Born in Newark, NJ, in 1770, Jacob Burnet (1770-1853) was the son of noted physician William Burnet, who was better known as George Washington's Surgeon General. He moved to the Ohio Valley and settled in Cincinnati in 1795. His career started in the state legislature with two successive terms in 1814 and 1815. In 1821, he was appointed to the Ohio Supreme Court to replace a recently deceased judge. He was eventually elected to serve a full seven-year term. In 1828, he was elected to the United States Senate to replace William Henry Harrison, who had recently become the ambassador to Colombia. His term expired in 1831. Burnet was an important figure in the political and cultural landscape of Cincinnati and served as president of the Historical and Philosophical Society of Ohio in the late 1830s-early 1840s. He was also a shareholder in many regional companies and developed an important portfolio of investments throughout his life. Throughout his life and political career, Burnet was known as a staunch Federalist, and supported the presidential campaign of Henry Clay in 1824. He was also an advocate of the movement to send freed Blacks to Africa and was an officer of the Cincinnati Colonization Society. He, for instance, opposed the publication of the abolitionist newspaper The Philanthropist. Judge Jacob Burnet died in 1853. This portrait is said to have descended in the family from the sitter himself to his great-grandson Jacob Wendell Burnet. The painting was donated to the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution by Mrs. Katherine Birkbile Burnet, wife of Mr. Jacob Wendell Burnet, in memory of her late husband, in 1994. Marie DeMare's catalogue G.P.A Healy: American Artist references an 1862 exhibit in Chicago featuring ten portraits by the artist, including one of Judge Burnet. It is speculated that this portrait was indeed displayed in the exhibit. The work is characteristic of Healy's portraiture style, and a sharp rendition of the sitter's personality and appearance, "swarthy, slender, a bit above average height, and most notable for piercing black eyes with which he was expert at intimidating wayward witnesses." (The Princetonians, 1791-1794, A Biographical Dictionary, J. Jefferson Looney and Ruth L. Woodward).

George Peter Alexander Healy (American, 1813-1894, act. New Orleans, 1843-1868), "Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900)", 1877, oil on canvas, signed and dated upper left, "From Geo. Ryneal, Jr., Washington D.C." canvas stamp en verso, 24 in. x 20 in., framed. Note: The second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Alfred was created Duke of Edinburgh in 1866. In 1874 he married Grand-Duchess Marie Alexandra, daughter of Czar Alexander II, at Saint Petersburg, and the prince and princess’s children were born in the years bracketing this sensitive portrait (painted probably either in Paris, while the artist was in residence there in the 1870s, or in Washington—as suggested by the stamp of a D.C. art supplier on the back of the canvas—where the Prince may have been visiting the British Embassy). Prince Alfred became Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1893, and died at Coburg (distraught by the romantically induced suicide of his son and namesake in 1899), in 1900.

GEORGE PETER ALEXANDER HEALY (IL/MA, 1813-1894) - The Rt. Rev. Jeremiah Porter, oil on canvas, signed center right and dated 1892 (although taken from a photo of him at the time of the Civil War). Consigned by a descendent. Housed in the original reticulated gilt gesso frame. OS: 35 1/2" x 30 1/2", SS: 23 3/4" x 19 3/4", good condition. The Rev. Porter (1804-1893) and his wife Eliza Emily Chappell Porter (1807-1888), led remarkable lives, having many adventures together while serving the Presbyterian Church. An 1831 graduate of the Princeton Sminary, he first served on the western frontier on Mackinac Island, off Detroit, ministering to the Indians during the Blackhawk War, this is also where he met his wife. They organized the First Presbyterian Church in Chicago in 1834, followed shortly by the first public school in the town (in their log cabin). Their subsequent home in Green Bay, Wisconsin was the last stop on the Underground Railroad before crossing into Canada. When the war broke out, they worked together with the Sanitary Committee, in hospitals that followed major battles from Vicksburg to Atlanta. After the war, Porter became Chaplain to US Grant and his Regiment, at Forts Brown Sill & Russell. They also founded a series of public schools along the Texas/Mexico border, while based in Brownsville. Both ended their days in Chicago.

Attributed to George Peter Alexander Healy (American, 1813-1894), "Portrait of a Lady", c. 1855-60, oil on canvas, unsigned, 36 in. x 29 in., very elaborate original carved giltwood frame, verso of top rail with an extensive original framers' label: "Jones, Wood [...] / Gilders and Colormen[?] / [Looking Gla]ss, Portrait, & Picture [Framers] / [...] Manufacturers. / [Paint]ings & Li[thographs] / [...] Wood & Gilt Mo[ldings] / Wholesale and Retail / No. 89 Montgomery Street, near California / San Francisco." Note: This spectacular portrait would evidently have been painted either in Chicago-where Healy lived from 1855 to 1867-or in New Orleans (where the artist definitely worked in 1860-1861, and perhaps also during two or three winters in the late 1850s), then taken to San Francisco to be framed. The contemporary framers were a firm established in the Parrot Granite Block on the NW corner of Montgomery and California Streets, which stood from 1852 to 1926; its three substantial stories were not materially harmed in the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, but the structure was eventually demolished to make way for the Financial Center Building. The sitter was doubtless a prominent member of San Francisco society during the Civil War years. Every hallmark of Healy's well-known style is present in this painting, lot 213. Almost uniquely among American artists of the period, he favored the extended format of a three-quarter-length sitting figure. He was also partial to carefully-delineated chairs, of which a typical model is included here, the example with tufted upholstery behind the Lady. The Lady's coiffure is one of Healy's trademarks, and her superb black lace shawl, thrown negligently over the rich silks of her dress, has an absolutely precise parallel in the portrait (c. 1853) of Governor Sharkey's Wife, in a private collection in Mississippi (which also happens to be exactly the same size). Very similar white lace trim adorns Healy's monumental 1860 portrait of the Confederate socialite Myra Knox Semmes, in a private Louisiana collection. Memorably combining diplomatic manners and great personal charm with obvious skill and exceptional speed, G. P. A. Healy of Boston became a truly international celebrity, whose natural talents and affable character appealed equally to royalty, gentry, and patriots. He was encouraged by Thomas Sully and patronized by Mrs. Harrison Grey Otis to make the first of his (eventually thirty) transatlantic crossings, to study in Paris with Baron Gros (and later with Thomas Couture). He became one of the favorite painters of King Louis-Philippe of France, and the King and Queen of Romania; after long residences in Paris, London, and New York he settled in Chicago, where he made a specialty of painting generals, statesmen, and presidents (his 1864 Seated Lincoln, at the Newberry Library there, is one of his most celebrated works). His fame only intensified over the remaining thirty years of his life, and it has aptly been remarked that his cosmopolitanism prefigured and rivaled that of John Singer Sargent in the next generation. Identified on a frame plaque as "Jacob Carlson Cox, Union General Civil War". The frame plaque appears to misidentify the sitter, as his correct name was Jacob Dotson Cox. Cox saw action in the war with Ambrose Burnside at the Battle of Antietam. After the War he was elected Governor of Ohio and served from 1866-1867, but his moderate views on suffrage and his support of President Johnson's Reconstruction plans prevented him from being nominated for a second term. After returning to a private law practice he became Secretary of the Interior under Grant. Oil on canvas, 27" x 22 1/2". Framed.
