Heemskerck, Jacoba van Expressionismus Stadt. Um 1915. Tusche auf Bristol (mit dem Blindstempel). 47,6 x 62,8 cm. Monogrammiert. Voll aufgezogen auf Unterlage und im Passepartout freigestellt. - Kanten etwas bestoßen. Dort teils mit Farbabrieb, vereinzelt kleineren Fehlstellen und einem kürzeren Randeinriss. Insgesamt etwas berieben und mit wenigen Kratzspuren. Als eine der wenigen Künstlerinnen, war Jacoba van Heemskerck eine beudetende Akteurin der Modernen Kunst, die sich Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts in Europa entwickelte. Heemskerck hielt sich im Umkreis Piet Mondrians auf und nahm ab 1914 an bedeutenden Ausstellungen wie Herwarth Waldens Herbstsalon teil. Walden, der später auch Ihr Agent wurde, unterstützte die Künstlerin auf Ihrem Weg in die expressiv-gestische Abstraktion. Ink on Bristol. Monogrammed. Gips' (lower right) Stained glass, The irregularly shaped panes executed in at least ten different colours, and stained with organic looking lines. Van Heemskerck's colourful and enigmatic approach to painting has been described by the Kunstmuseum in The Hague as a 'prelude' to the stained glass windows she designed later in her life. During her career, she gradually started to abstract her figurative compositions, a process and philosophy that was similar to Piet Mondrian's outlook on art and life. Her experiments with the medium of stained glass were important to her, since they enabled her to explore the nature of colour and of light, as well as their relationship. 'Zeichnung no. 26' East Indian ink on paper, 46x61,5 cm After 1911 the intellectual-spiritual and artistic Jonkvrouw Jacoba Berendina van Heemskerck van Beest (The Hague, 4 January 1876–Domburg, 3 August 1923) developed an interest in theosophy and became strongly attracted to Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophy. Her methods were also influenced by the musician, poet, and art critic Herwarth Walden, leader of the movement ‘Der Sturm’ in Berlin, who would become a key figure among expressionist artists. Jacoba’s work evolved in the years 1914–15 to feature a more lively interplay of lines as she developed her use of triangles and zigzag shapes. Movement and countermovement alternate rhythmically, often in black and white. In this period she repeatedly portrayed an abstracted mountain with trees and houses located in the water. This mountain seems to be inspired by the Mont Saint-Michel, which she must have visited during an earlier stay in Brittany, France. The motif of this characteristic mountain also formed the basis for ‘Zeichnung No. 26’. Jacoba van Heemskerck van Beest (1876-1923) Jacoba van Heemskerck van Beest received her first training in painting with her father Jacob Eduard. From 1897 to 1901, she studied at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. In addition, she took lessons with Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig in the Netherlands and Eugène Carrière in Paris. She received further influences from the Cubist movement. In 1913, she presented her works along with the artists of Der Blaue Reiter at the First German Autumn Salon in Berlin, following an invitation of Herwarth Walden. This event led her to the path of abstraction, and Walden became her agent. Heemskerck exhibited several times at the famous Galerie Sturm directed by Herwarth Walden, who even dedicated her the seventh volume of his Sturm books.
