He became a charismatic icon and advocate of the sexual revolution and personal freedom. He became famous when in the 1960s he ran his empire from the spacious bed of the Playboy Mansion located in Chicago. The mogul owned a chain of nightclubs, staffed by girls disguised as bunnies ("bunnys") and extended to other businesses, such as casinos and hotels. In that same year "Playboy's Penthouse" was produced, a weekly TV series where he appeared with friends of the magazine, such as the comedian Lenny Bruce and singers like Ella Fitzgerald, conducting interviews with public figures. It was his demonstration against puritanism and in favor of life's pleasures.
