        Est: €300 - €400

Carl Alexander von Heideloff (1789 Stuttgart - 1865 Hassfurt): Congratulations on the New Year 1822, 1822, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: Inscribed and dated in the image: "Zum neuen Jahr 1822", signed lower left in the printing plate. Date: 1822 Description: The artist of this sheet was of many talents: Carl Alexander von Heideloff was active as a painter, sculptor, architect, monument conservator, etcher and engraver and also wrote a number of theoretical treatises. Completely the child of his time, his main interest was in the past, especially the Romanesque and Gothic architecture of Germany, which he studied assiduously and often restored according to his ideas of "stylistic purity". Also inspired by the art of Romanticism is this etching entitled "To the New Year 1822", which Heideloff must have sent as a New Year's greeting - just as he was to do again in 1826 and 1827. [Boek 1958, p. 380 lists the sheets "Zum Neuen Jahr 1826" and "Zum Neuen Jahr von Carl Heideloff 1827" by Heideloff.] The subject alone suggests a self-portrait by the artist, who in that year was appointed curator of the city's art monuments in Nuremberg. A tree forms the background of the scene. Although the trunk has broken off and some branches are bare, there is still rich foliage on many of the branches. The picture is dominated by the cloth stretched between the outer forks of the branches, in the centre of which is a rapturous-looking head surrounded by a nimbus of rays - perhaps a portrait of Heideloff himself. The cursorily sketched portrait is framed on both sides by a cornucopia from which blossoms, fruits and coins (including a money bag with the numerical value "1000") fall. The artist, now with a carefully worked out portrait head, is once again depicted in full figure at the right edge of the picture, holding the sheet. On the other side sits a trusting looking dog. Heideloff was undoubtedly keen to add familiar symbolic elements to his New Year's greeting: The tree, which here stands both for the year that has ended and for the possibilities of the new one, was an extremely popular motif, especially in the art of the Romantic period, which he appreciated. The dog was considered a symbol of loyalty, which could well be a reference to Heideloff's enduring friendship, which he wanted to assure the recipients of the etching. In the abundance of allusions, Heideloff's rather restrained portrait becomes somewhat of a secondary matter, but the sheet itself wins through the multitude of allegorical motifs. Keywords: Greeting, New Year, Painter, Sculptor, Architect, Monument keeper, Etcher, Engraver, Artist, Congratulations, Printmaking, Etching, 19th century, Romanticism, Fashion, Germany,

        E. SCHULER (*1805) after HEIDELOFF (*1789), Drinking Society, Steel engraving

        Est: €45 - €75

Eduard Schuler (1805 Strasbourg - 1882 Lichtenthal) after Carl Alexander von Heideloff (1789 Stuttgart - 1865 Hassfurt): Festive genre scene with champagne, 19th century, Steel engraving Technique: Steel engraving on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Heideloff del. | Schuler sculps.". Date: 19th century Description: In the dining room of an elegantly furnished house, a party meets for a festive get-together. At the table sits a young lady who reaches for the champagne bottle on the table and is courted by a young gentleman while another applauds. In the middle of the room is a displeased-looking man in uniform who resolutely opposes one of the revelers. The quiet confrontation contrasts sharply with the relaxed mood of those seated at the table or with the two figures in the background, where a youth is wooing a bashful maid. Presumably the depiction illustrates the scene of a novel or drama. Keywords: 19th century, Romanticism, Professions, Germany,
