  • Paulus Hennekyn (Dutch, 1611-1672) Portrait of a young girl in three-quarter len
    Jun. 09, 2023

Paulus Hennekyn (Dutch, 1611-1672) Portrait of a young girl in three-quarter len

    Est: $12,000 - $18,000

Paulus Hennekyn (Dutch, 1611-1672) Portrait of a young girl in three-quarter length holding a fan, circa 1650 Oil on canvas 31-1/4 x 25-3/4 inches (79.4 x 65.4 cm) PROVENANCE: Private collection, Oregon. We are grateful to Dr. Fred G. Meijer for attributing the present work to Dutch portraitist, Paulus Hennekyn, an Amsterdam-based follower of Bartholomeus van der Helst, on the basis of high resolution photographs, and for dating the work to circa 1650 based on the dress. On the basis of comparisons with Hennekyn's signed works, Meijer notes the identical handling of the face and the same interest in detail expressed in the garment, hair, and ornaments. See in particular Portrait of an unknown woman, dated 1645, with Galerie Edel, Cologne/London in 2002-3, and Portrait of a woman, signed and dated 1647, with Zamek Królewski na Wawelu, Kraków. Two earlier works by the artist from 1642 and circa 1645 respectively in the collection of the Rijksmuseum also provide useful comparisons: Portrait of Anna van der Does and Portrait of Dirck Meulenaer. The present work is an important addition to Hennekyn's oeuvre as the only portrait of a child by the artist that has been identified to date. HID01801242017
