PATRICK HENNESSY, RHA IRISH, 1915-1980 WHITE ROSES IN A GLASS JAR Oil on panel Lower right signed Hennessy; verso gallery label: Pyms Gallery, London: stock no. D696 Catalogue note: Patrick Hennessy was one of Ireland's most successful post-war realist painters. A prolific artist, he created traditional portraits, landscapes, equine studies and still-lifes, but he also created works unlike anything being made in Ireland at the time. Fusing realism with a Surrealist subjectivity learned in Paris from the Ferdnand Leger, Hennessy painted human figures isolated in the landscape, and haunting still-lifes that puzzled Irish critics who branded him "something of an outsider." Patrick Hennessy RHA (1915-1980) LADY URSULA VERNON, AT BRUREE HOUSE, COUNTY LIMERICK oil on canvas signed lower left h:36  w:48 in. Provenance: Phillips, London, 18 September 1990, lot 176; Private collection Exhibited: Possibly exhibited at Thomas Agnew & Sons, London, 10 October to 3 November 1956 Lady Ursula Grosvenor (1902-1978) was the eldest child of Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster, a British landowner and one of the wealthiest men in Britain. Her first marriage to William Patrick Filmer-Sankey, a famous jockey, ended in divorce in 1940. She later married Major Stephen Vernon, a former officer in the Irish Guards, left handicapped after contracting polio during the war. By her first husband, she had two sons, Patrick and Christopher, who died during her lifetime, while her only child with Vernon died young. The couple shared a love of horses and the Duke charged Major Vernon with running a stud farm - which he did successfully - at Bruree, in the southeast of County Limerick. Hennessy and his life partner and fellow artist Harry Robertson Craig became friendly with the Vernons around the early 1950s - when Hennessy's reputation had been sealed with a ten-year retrospective held at the RHA in 1951 - and they were among a number of patrons/friends of the artists who moved in very influential circles. Sixty-five years on, a major retrospective of Patrick Hennessy's career took place at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin and this exhibition and accompanying catalogue charted his artistic development and life which included a number of references to the Vernons over the period of a decade. (1) The first entry, 1953, records among the artist's addresses "c/o Major Vernon, Bruree House, County Limerick for Christmas". However one might assume that they were well acquainted at this point considering their presence there during the holiday period. In 1954 the artist exhibited The Lawn Meet (150gns) at the Dublin Painters which depicts a hunting party gathered outside the Vernon's home, Bruree House. A large tree similar to the one in the present example flanks the right side of the composition (a print from this oil can be found in the collection of Limerick City Museum, reference no.1990.0226). In 1955 Major Vernon acquired The Bronze Horses of St Marks - a product of Hennessy's time in Venice - shown at the Royal Academy in London and the following year a portrait of Lady Ursula (possibly the present example) was shown at Thomas Agnew & Sons, London. Among the 38 paintings in that show was a portrait of author Elizabeth Bowen, the painting was later donated by Major Vernon to the Crawford Gallery, Cork. By 1957 Hennessy and Craig were spending time in both Bruree and the Vernon's summer retreat - Fairfield, Summercove, Kinsale, where in 1961 Hennessy painted a mural "...framing the window overlooking the harbour comprising of masses of pink roses entwined around Corinthian columns on both sides of the window and spreading across the entablature." (2) From 1960 however Hennessy's health had deteriorated and they began spending more time abroad, particularly during the colder months. No further references to the Vernons are included in the timeline after 1961. In the present work Lady Ursula, dressed in shades of brown in Gingham and corduroy stands in the foreground, arms folded and gazing into the distance. Dominating the rest of the canvas is a large, bare tree, its gnarled humanoid trunk acting as a foil to the serene figure beside it. At the base of the tree among the wild flowers rests a dachshund, while in the distance at the top of a flight of limestone steps is a man, the Major perhaps, paying attention to another dog. Unlike the earlier painting, The Lawn Meet, which records the pageantry of a hunt by the landed gentry, here Bruree - a sizable six-bay Gothic Revival country house built c.1830 - and the status is represents is but a footnote in the lower right of the composition. This painting is a meditation on relationships and not simply between the two people depicted in it and their environment. In 2011 a number of works formerly in the collection of Lady Vernon were offered for auction (3) among them was a pair of miniature portraits by Hennessy and Craig - of each other - which were given to Lady Ursula and Major Vernon "with love" as a Christmas gift in 1960 and watercolours depicting Bruree and "Ursie's dachshunds, Elsa, Feathers, Pearl and Lexel." (4). The present work stands as further testament to this important relationship in Patrick Hennessy's life and reflects well on the artist as well as his friends and patrons. Patrick Hennessy RHA (1915 - 1980) Rebuilding of Monte Cassino (1951) Oil on canvas 64 x 76cm (25¼ x 30”) Signed Provenance: Collection of Pamela and George Fegan, purchased directly from the artist, thence by descent to the present owners. Exhibited: Dublin, Royal Hibernian Academy, 1952, cat.no. 126 as ‘Rebuilding Cassino’; Dublin, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Patrick Hennessy: De Profundis, March/July 2016 Literature: Patrick Hennessy: De Profundis, IMMA 2016, illustrated p. 43. Monte Cassino is a rocky hill about 130 kilometres southeast of Rome, and at an elevation of 520 m it commands a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and valleys. Site of the Roman town of Casinum, it is known for its abbey, the first house of the Benedictine Order, having been established around 529AD. After centuries of sackings by invaders, abandonment and rebuilding, the 11th and 12th centuries were the abbey's golden age, but this sadly was short-lived. In 1799, Monte Cassino was sacked again by French troops during the French Revolutionary Wars and was then dissolved by the Italian government in 1866, the building becoming a national monument with the monks as custodians of its treasures. During the later stages of World War II, it was the site of the Battle of Monte Cassino. On 15 February 1944 the abbey was nearly destroyed in a series of heavy, American-led air raids. The abbey was considered a key observation post and it was thought by the allies that it was occupied by the Germans. However, during the bombing no German troops were present in the abbey. Following the bombing the ruins of the monastery were occupied by the German 1st Parachute Division, due to the ruins providing excellent defensive cover. The Abbey was rebuilt after the war with the President of the Italian Republic Luigi Einaudi committing considerable resources to the rebuilding. By the early 1950’s Patrick Hennessy was enjoying considerable success and saw his painting De Profundis selected to tour North America as part of an exhibition of Contemporary Irish Painting. A retrospective exhibition of his work from the period 1941-51 mounted by the Dublin Painters further confirmed his growing reputation and by this time he was in a position to travel extensively in Europe. Paintings by Hennessy exhibited at the RHA annual exhibitions in 1952 and ‘53, including the Rebuilding of Monte Cassino suggest that he was travelling around Italy with titles referencing (Monte) Cassino, Rome and Venice. The present work which dates to 1951 depicts a view of the abbey under a dappled blue sky, shrouded in scaffolding and displays the artist’s passion for stone, with partially destroyed masonry and brickwork in the foreground reminding the viewer of the impact of the allied bombing raid from only seven years earlier.

Patrick Hennessy RHA (1915-1980) Never Ending Summer Oil on canvas, 64 x 76cm (25¼ x 30) Signed Exhibited: Ritchie Hendriks Gallery, Dublin. Original label verso In November 1964 at his annual exhibition at the Ritchie Hendriks Gallery, St. Stephens Green, Dublin, Patrick Hennessy exhibited 23 paintings with a broad spectrum of subject matter, the content of his travels from the previous year, the Irish countryside, still lives, rose studies, mementos from Spain, and a number of paintings of Moroccan objects and countryside, Morocco was becoming a greater part of Hennessy's life and he was spending up to six months of the year there, avoiding the Irish winters for health reasons. The painting 'The Never Ending Summer' a landscape is probably a view existing only in Hennessy's mind, a blue hazy sky, a dry arid vista with a high rocky mountain in the background dominating the centre of the canvas, a low shallow stretch of water clearly below normal level with sun bleached stones from the river bed completing the effect of a long dry period. The inclusion of a spray of brilliant red roses with luxuriant green foliage that dominate the foreground and contrasts sharply with the landscape is a Hennessy trademark and a device he used many times. The landscape has all the elements of a Hennessy capriccio. Kevin A. Ruttledge

Patrick Hennessy RHA (1915 - 1980) Marine Encounter (PH212) Oil on Canvas, 62.5 x 89cm (25 x 35) Signed Provenance: With Guildhall Galleries, Chicago, label verso; Private Collection, Dublin Hennessy’s work was very different to that of his Irish contemporaries, he favoured more traditional subject matter, landscapes, still lives and portraits. His finesse and skill as a painter were best exemplified in his depiction of animal life, with an incredible eye for detail and anatomical correctness. His works have a slightly surreal character, often set within isolated landscapes, each with their own internal narrative. In this work the odd encounter of the butterfly, song bird and conch shells, are arranged as a miniature tableau. Hennessy is influenced by the art historical genre of still life painting, mastered by Dutch Golden Age artists, in which animals and food were arranged in highly realistic and abundant displays. Ill health led to permanent move to Morocco in 1968, where he could benefit from a warmer climate. Some of his later works, depict the deserts of that landscape, such as Mare and Foal, sold in these rooms in 2019. The beach landscape in this work is suggestive of the North African coastline, with its distinctive cliff faces, one in the immediate background, stands as individual layers of rock stacked on top of each other, eroded by the seawater. While in the farther distance, an impressive promontory cuts through the picture plane and into the sea beyond. Niamh Corcoran, November 2023

Patrick Hennessy RHA (1915-1980) THE KILLARNEY BOY

    Est: €12,000 - €15,000

Patrick Hennessy RHA (1915-1980) THE KILLARNEY BOY oil on canvas signed lower left; with Guildhall Gallery [Chicago] label on reverse h:25  w:35 in. Provenance: Cottone Auctions, New York, 28 September 2019, lot 79; Private collection The American market was an important platform and lucrative revenue stream for Patrick Hennessy. His relationship with the prestigious Guildhall Galleries on Michigan Boulevard, Chicago began in 1966, however, it was much earlier in his career - towards the end of the 1940s - when he came to the attention of American audiences in a favorable review by Time Magazine of a Manhattan Gallery exhibition showing the work of twelve Irish artists, including Jack B. Yeats and Louis le Brocquy. (1) The following decade Hennessy and his life partner, the artist Henry (Harry) Robertson Craig RHA (1916-1984), played a vital role in the establishment of their friend David Hendrik's gallery at No. 3 St. Stephen's Green, Dublin. The gallery opened on 12 April 1956 and provided Hennessy - among many other artists - with financial security owing to annual solo exhibitions and participation in group shows. Opportunities for Hennessy grew in tandem with the gallery's reputation, among them a contract with the distinguished Guildhall Galleries, renowned for their professional work practices, innovative marketing, and the use of superior framers. Although undated, the present work bears the Guildhall Galleries label which places it in the latter half of the 1960s or later. Hennessy's first solo exhibition took place there in 1966, it was a success and the beginning of a mutually beneficial relationship. Testament to the achievements of artist and dealer, by 1975 Hennessy was the subject of a ten-year retrospective with the Guildhall. A small number of Kerry paintings by Patrick Hennessy have appeared at auction, unpopulated scenes in the main, among them Lakes of Killarney formerly the collection of Eoin O'Malley and Una O'Higgins O'Malley. (2) The Killarney Boy, uses a device typical of the artist, placing a figure of a young man in the foreground of a rural setting. The adolescent gazes out from the canvas, a woolen jumper knotted across a white, neatly buttoned shirt. He appears in the landscape without being part of it a recurring theme in Hennessy's oeuvre. The Killarney Boy probably dates to around 1968 based on its similarities with the privately owned Boy and Pony, Killarney of the same year (3). Est: €4,000 - €6,000

Patrick Hennessy RHA (1915-1980) The Spanish Christ oil on board signed lower left h:37  w:27 cm. Provenance: The Ritchie Hendriks Gallery, Dublin (label verso); Private Collection Not an artist to be easily categorised, there is an unique quality to the Realist paintings of Patrick Hennessy, infused as they are with a strong Surrealist sensibility. Combining two of Hennessy's preoccupations, a love of roses and a sense of the limited lifespan of humanity, this small canvas depicts the head of Christ, bearded, suffering and crowned with thorns, alongside a bouquet of pink and red roses. Seen from a high vantage point, Christ's head is depicted close-up, but turning away, as if to reject the transitory beauty of the flowers. The painting is a 'Vanitas', part of a European artistic tradition that seeks to reject the fleeting pleasures of an earthly existence and points the way instead towards a life of spiritual awareness and a sense of the infinite rather than the finite. It is one of Hennessy's more profound paintings, revealing his inner feelings and aspirations. Many of his paintings can be described as 'momento mori' or reminders of death. Apart from the red and pink petals, the painting is characterised by its sombre colouring. In the late 1930's, after studying under James McIntosh Patrick at the art school in Dundee, Hennessy returned to his native Ireland. His first exhibition in Dublin, held in 1939 at the Country Shop, was opened by Mainie Jellett. Hennessy showed regularly in Dublin from 1941 onwards, and also in Scotland, while in later years he had regular exhibitions in Chicago, where his still-lives and flower paintings sold well. While portraits feature in his early career, in later years Hennessy turned more to landscape, and, with his partner Harry Robertson Craig, began to spend winters in North Africa while working in the West of Ireland and in Cork during the summer months. For a number of years they lived in Kinsale, in a house overlooking the sea at Summercove, the dining room of which Craig decorated with murals of trellises and flowers. Peter Murray, September 2021

    Patrick Hennessy RHA (1915 - 1980) - Sunset Cavalcade

Patrick Hennessy RHA (1915 - 1980) Sunset Cavalcade Oil on canvas, 62.5 x 88cm (24½ x 34½) Signed Horses are a common theme in Hennessy's work, appearing in various iterations, often part of larger landscape and figural scenes, such as this seascape example. His finesse and skill as a painter were best exemplified in his depiction of animals, with an incredible eye for detail and anatomical correctness. In this present work, the features of the horses' faces are beautifully rendered, and he focuses our attention on certain details, the tautness of the muscles as they walk, the wind rushing through the white horses' mane. Hennessy was a prolific painter, fusing a photo-realist style with a strange almost surrealist character, depicting figures in isolated landscapes, works with their own hidden internal narrative. The paintings often contained visual codes that signified a clear portrayal of homosexual life, a theme which was largely ignored by the art critics in the 1960s and 70s of conservative catholic Ireland. Ireland in the post-war years, had not experienced the same developments in artistic movements as other European capitals at the time. The RHA denominated the artistic scene in Ireland in the 1940s and while Hennessey was elected an associated of the academy in 1948, it was through independent galleries such as Victor Waddington and Richie Hendriks, in particular, that he achieved significant success and much needed support throughout his career. Portraits of male figures appear predominately in his work, in which he celebrates the friendships and relationships between men. This group or cavalcade, set against the beautiful golden sky, creates a dreamlike atmosphere with the sun slowly setting behind the horizon line and casting a dappled glow across water's surface.
