General George E. Pickett Rare Autograph Letter Signed, To Henry K. Craig

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

George A. Pickett Bellingham, WA, October 1, 1856 General George E. Pickett Rare Autograph Letter Signed, To Henry K. Craig ALS An early and rare autograph letter signed "G. E. Pickett Capt. 9th Inf" one page, 7.75" x 9.66", "Mil Post Bellingham Bay", Washington, Oct. 1, 1856. On blue lined letterhead to Henry K. Craig, Chief of Ordnance in Washington. Folds, one lightly toned, otherwise very good. In part: "…I have the honor to request that a copy of the ordnance Regulation and also the Ordnance Manual may be furnished for the use of Co. 'D' 9th Inf. I have no doubt that these books were forwarded to the Compy soon after its organization at Ft. Monroe Va. but I suppose they did not reach their destination as they are not on hand, and I do not find them taken up on the Return for 4th Qr 1855…". At the time of this letter, Pickett was commanding the construction of Fort Bellingham on Bellingham Bay, Washington. The construction started two months before this letter, on August 26, 1956, with the object to erect a protective structure against incursions by Canadian Natives and those of the Russian Territories. Pickett had been promoted to Captain of the 9th Infantry the year before. A poor student at West Point turned decorated soldier for his role in the Battle of Chapultepec during the Mexican-American War, throughout his military career George E. Pickett (1825-1875) is remembered two extremes in performance. Brevetted twice during the Mexican-American War, Pickett went on to lead brilliantly in the "Pig War" of 1859 which pitted the United States against the British over the border of the San Juan Islands between Vancouver and Washington. Pickett faced a vastly superior British naval force and prevented a British landing, and was again brevetted for that repulsion. However, Pickett's reputation would forever also be synonymous with failure as the Confederate leader of the ill-fated "Pickett's Charge" offensive on the final day of the Battle of Gettysburg. John Longstreet organized the infantry frontal attack toward the center of the Union lines and which resulted in 1,500 Union casualties and over 6,000 Confederate dead, yet Pickett was roundly blamed. The failure of the "Charge" was a blow to the Confederacy and ended Lee's invasion of the North. Pickett never forgave Robert E. Lee for ordering the charge and ensuing destruction of his command, and died a bitter man. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
