James (Henry). Plans and Photographs of Stonehenge, and of Turusachan in the Island of Lewis

            Est: £400 - £600

James (Henry). Plans and Photographs of Stonehenge, and of Turusachan in the Island of Lewis James (Henry). Plans and Photographs of Stonehenge, and of Turusachan in the Island of Lewis; with Notes relating to the Druids and Sketches of Cromlechs in Ireland, 1st edition, [Southampton: Ordnance Survey], 1867, 8 zincographed plates and plans, 8 mounted albumen prints of Stonehenge (18.5 x 23.5 cm and similar), 2 further mounted albumen prints from drawings by Henry James, one of these loose, a little spotting and dust-soiling, original cloth gilt, rubbed and some edge wear, backstrip deficient, folio QTY: (1) NOTE: Gernsheim, 359. This copy of a scarce and important photographic incunable differs slightly from most copies. The unnumbered illustration titled 'Turusachan, Callernish, or, the place of pilgrimage on the bleak headland in the Isle of Lewis' is usually reproduced as a zincograph, as the following illustrations numbered 12 to 15 at the end of the volume. However, the illustration here is a mounted albumen print of the same illustration. The additional mounted albumen print found loosely inserted bears the printed title 'Stonehenge restored: Druidical sacrifice'.

          • James, Henry | The Portrait of a Lady, the author's enduring and best-loved tale
            Dec. 08, 2023

James, Henry | The Portrait of a Lady, the author's enduring and best-loved tale

            Est: $25,000 - $35,000

Property from an Important American Collection James, Henry The Portrait of a Lady. London: Macmillan and Co., 1881 3 volumes, 8vo. Half-titles, 24pp. of publisher's advertisements dated April 1881 at end of volume III. Publisher's dark blue cloth, spines gilt; upper joint of volume II a little frayed. Collector's morocco slipcase, folding chemises. First edition of James's most popular and enduring novel. "Trying to recover here, for recognition, the germ of my idea, I see that it must have consisted not at all in any conceit of a 'plot'... but altogether in the sense of a single character, the character and aspect of a particular engaging young woman, to which all the usual elements of a 'subject', certainly of a setting, were to need to be super added" (James, Preface to the New York edition of the novel, 1907). Henry James's novel follows the character of Isabel Archer from New York to England and Rome as she maneuvers amorous advances and the burden of sudden wealth. James regularly sought the complexities of the Anglo-American dynamic and interplay as material for his writing, reflecting his identity as an American citizen that spent a vast portion of his life in Europe (eventually becoming a British citizen in 1915). Having first appeared serially in Macmillan's Magazine and Atlantic Monthly from October 1880, The Portrait of a Lady in book form followed in November 1881. The first impression of 750 copies was issued in two variant colors of cloth (no precedence has been established between the two). Most copies were issued with advertisements dated December 1881 but some have this earlier set, "probably inserted through error or through shortage at the bindery of the more contemporary catalogue" (Edel and Laurence).   An exquisite copy of a notoriously scarce book. REFERENCES: Sadleir 1281, Edel and Laurence A16(a); Connolly, The Modern Movement 1 PROVENANCE: Louise Stewart Bradshaw (ownership inscription)

          • James (Henry) The Two Magics, first edition, second issue, 1898.
            Aug. 24, 2023

James (Henry) The Two Magics, first edition, second issue, 1898.

            Est: £150 - £200

James (Henry) The Two Magics, first edition, second impression [colonial issue], endpapers browned, original blue cloth (Heinemann's third binding) with 9 tulips in blind, lettered in gilt, light staining, spine a little faded, otherwise a crisp and fresh copy, [Edel & Laurence A52a], 8vo, 1898. ⁂ This copy is one of 300 copies of the colonial issue of The Two Magics. Copies such as this one were comprised of American sheets in English bindings to supplement the English printings; Edel and Laurence explain that these colonial issues "replaced quire shortages in the domestic second impression." Accordingly, while this issue came later in the second impression, it is still considered scarce because of its unusual issue. The Two Magics collects two pieces of James' short fiction: the novella "The Turn of the Screw" and the short story "Covering End."
