New York, 1841. 3 x 7.75 inch off-white ribbon on a silk with black print, featuring an eagle with "Our Nation Mourns a Hero Gone" ribbon at top, with a portrait of Harrison underneath with flags, scythe, and an hourglass. Text underneath reads "Gen. William Henry Harrison. Born at Berkley, Virginia, Feb. 9th, 1773. Inaugurated President of the United States, March 4th, 1841. Died April 4th, 1841 Aged 68 Years, 1 Mo., 15 Days. The melancholy occasion, solemnized at New York. April 10th, 1841," with "Fire Department" underneath and an illustration of an early fire pumper truck at bottom. The back features a biography, highlighting the important deeds and details of Harrison's life. William Henry Harrison (February 9, 1773 - April 4, 1841) was an American military officer and politician who served as the ninth president of the United States for 31 days in 1841, becoming the first president to die in office and the shortest-serving U.S. president in history. His death sparked a brief constitutional crisis regarding succession to the presidency, as at the time the U.S. Constitution did not make it entirely clear what should be done in the event of a president's death. Modern tan morocco pictorially stamped in gilt and inlays of red and black morocco, spine gilt with 4 raised bands, green morocco lettering pieces, gilt dentelles, green watered silk endpapers, edges gilt. An ink notation on the title page tells us that this example was extra-illustrated in ink and watercolors by Hank Laventhol in September, 1969, suggesting that the binding was probably also done at that time. Laventhol (1927-2001) was known for his printmaking, but here he has filled the otherwise drab half-title with verdant colors, and illuminated the margins of numerous pages with color and ink drawings. Yates was born in Schenectady, NY in 1845, where he painted local views, sweeping western panoramas, scenes of New York City and Civil War battle scenes. Yates enlisted in the 124th Infantry known as “The Orange Blossoms” during the Civil War and saw action in about twelve battles. Soon after his return to NY Yates painted the Battle of Gettysburg, which was later bought by the 1881 Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic and presented to the Soldiers' Home in Bath, New York. Two of his best-known works, are the New York Central Railroad, 1883 and the Dam on the Owasco Outlet with the Auburn Woolen Mill Factory complex, 1871, both of which are now housed at the Cayuga Museum and Historical Society. Political Unlisted and Highly Unusual Harrison & Tyler Presidential Campaign Silk Ribbon with Gold Braid and Two Vignettes September 11, 1840-Dated, Unlisted William Henry Harrison Presidential Campaign Silk Ribbon, with Gold Braid and Two Vignettes, Fine. Unlisted in Sullivan/Fischer's reference book, "American Political Ribbons and Ribbon Badges: 1825-1981" but with two different historical vignettes, similar to those found on WHH-51. This Silk Ribbon is printed in black on off-white Silk, titled, "Harrison & Tyler Convention at Brandywine Battle Ground Held September 11, 1840." The top vignette shows an active equestrian General General Harrison, likely at the 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe in Indiana with his upraised sword in hand directing his troops; the lower vignette shows the Harrison greeting a veteran in front of his iconic Log cabin. This Presidential Campaign Silk Ribbon measures 5.75" x 2.75" and it was stitched to a piece of black cloth measuring 6.5" x 3.25" then bejeweled with golden metallic thread braid to create a vivid border and metallic braid fringes decorating the bottom streaming about 1.25" long. A few minor holes are visible at upper left but they touch only above the horse's head. So many aspects of this historic Ribbon make it a standout. Being unlisted and unknown in Sullivan-Fischer makes it even more valuable.

Political William Henry Harrison Silhouette Printed Hand-Stitched Silk on Cloth Textile Not Recorded in "Threads of History" c. 1840, William Henry Harrison, Handsome Full Standing Portrait Silhouette on Printed and Hand-Stitched Color Silk on Cloth Framed Display, Choice Extremely Fine. William Henry Harrison was the 9th President of the United States, in office March 4, 1841 - April 4, 1841. This historic Printed Silhouette of an elderly Harrison on cloth measures 9.25" x 6.75" and has been tastefully framed with a mat to an overall size of 13" x 10.25". The backgrounds rich toning contrasts nicely with the black silhouette of Harrison, shown looking out of an open window. In three distinct areas, Hand-stitching with silk thread has been used to embellish the image. The curtains, to Harrison's left, as well as the painting hanging above Harrison, are given texture with the thread. The vase on the mantle of the fireplace features at least five different shades of threading for the floral arrangement. Centered on the fabric in printed text, as well as on a nameplate attached to the frame itself, is "William Henry Harrison." This extremely rare William Henry Harrison Silhouette Silk textile is the first we have offered. Impressive Type Not Recorded in "Threads of History." William Henry Harrison Sr. (February 9, 1773 - April 4, 1841) was the 9th President of the United States (1841), an American military officer, and the last President born as a British subject. He was 68 years, 23 days old at the time of his inauguration. He died of complications from pneumonia 31 days into his term, serving the shortest tenure in United States presidential history. He was the first president to die in office, and his death sparked a brief constitutional crisis. Its resolution left many unsettled questions following the presidential line of succession in regard to the Constitution until the passage of the Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1967. He was the grandfather of Benjamin Harrison, who served as the 23rd United States President from 1889 to 1893. Before election as president, Harrison served as the first congressional delegate from the Northwest Territory and the first Governor of Indiana Territory. He gained national fame for leading U.S. forces against Native Americans at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811, where he earned the nickname "Tippecanoe" (or "Old Tippecanoe"). As a general officer in the subsequent War of 1812, his most notable action was in the Battle of the Thames in 1813. This battle resulted in the death of Tecumseh and the dissolution of the Indian coalition which Tecumseh had led. After the war, Harrison moved to Ohio, where he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. In 1824, the state legislature elected him to the United States Senate. He served a truncated term after being appointed as Minister Plenipotentiary to Gran Colombia in May 1828. In Santa Fe de Bogot, he spoke with president Simn Bolvar, urging Bolvar to guide his nation toward American-style democracy. Returning to his farm in Ohio, Harrison lived in relative retirement until he was nominated for the presidency as one of several Whig Party candidates in the election of 1836. He received more votes than any other Whig, but was defeated by Democrat Martin Van Buren. He retired again to his farm. Van Buren soon became a major target of criticism from the Whigs surrounding economic difficulties following the Panic of 1837. Seeking to run a non-controversial and less ideological war hero who could defeat Van Buren based on popularity, a unified Whig Party nominated Harrison over party founder Henry Clay and fellow general Winfield Scott. John Tyler of Virginia was selected as his running mate. Harrison and Tyler defeated Van Buren in the 1840 election. However, Harrison died of pneumonia in April 1841, a month after taking office. Tyler then assumed all of the powers and duties of the president, setting a major precedent.

Signed as President William Henry Harrison, 24 March 1841 HARRISON, William Henry (1773-1841). Partly-printed document signed ("W. H. Harrison") as President, Washington, 24 March 1841. Countersigned by Daniel Webster as Secretary of State. One page, 378 x 298mm, on vellum with Great Seal of the United States affixed to the lower left (a few mounting remnants along left margin). The greatest presidential rarity: a document signed by Harrison during his brief, 32-day term in office. Harrison adds a bold signature to a scallop-top Mediterranean passport issued to the "Brig Mattapoisett" hailing from Mattapoisett, [Massachusetts], 149-ton Brig manned by a crew of 22 and carrying no weapons. Additionally signed by the Collector of Customs for New Bedford, Massachusetts. Harrison took the oath of office on 4 March in a driving rain, but the illness that soon befell him was likely not related to the inclement weather of his inauguration but to the polluted waters of the Potomac from which he took his drinking water. This document, dated only a week and a half before his untimely death on 4 April 1841 is very clean overall, and an excellent example of this rarest of all Presidential signatures.

Political William Henry Harrison Silhouette Printed Cloth Textile Not Recorded in "Threads of History" c. 1840, William Henry Harrison, Handsome Full Standing Portrait Silhouette on Printed and Hand-Stitched Color Silk on Cloth Framed Display, Choice Extremely Fine. William Henry Harrison was the 9th President of the United States, in office March 4, 1841 - April 4, 1841. This historic Printed Silhouette of an elderly Harrison on cloth measures 9.25" x 6.75" and has been tastefully framed with a mat to an overall size of 13" x 10.25". The backgrounds rich toning contrasts nicely with the black silhouette of Harrison, shown looking out of an open window. In three distinct areas, Hand-stitching with silk thread has been used to embellish the image. The curtains, to Harrison's left, as well as the painting hanging above Harrison, are given texture with the thread. The vase on the mantle of the fireplace features at least five different shades of threading for the floral arrangement. Centered on the fabric in printed text, as well as on a nameplate attached to the frame itself, is "William Henry Harrison."
