Attributed to Henry Hensche (German American, 1899-1992). "Boat on the Shore" oil on board, ca. 1933. A quaint scene presenting a modest fishing boat on the sandy shore with a lifeguard station atop a ladder in the distance, and a charming building to the right, all delineated in the artist's fresh Impressionist manner with lush brushstrokes, nice areas of palette knife work, and glimmering hues that truly capture the sensory impact of the scene. Hensche avidly studied Monet and aimed to abide by his keen perception of color or "full color seeing" as he called it. He studied under Charles Hawthorne, founder of the Cape Cod School of Art (est. in Provincetown, 1899) and went on to embrace Hawthorne's in addition to Monet's and William Merritt Chase's colorist approach. Hensche also taught many successful artists in Provincetown, including William Draper, Franz Kline, and Nelson Shanks. Size: 20" L x 16" W (50.8 cm x 40.6 cm) "As a painter and teacher of consummate skill, Hensche is considered by many in the art world to be an unparalleled colorist - a painter justly deserving the artistic lineage that extends back just two generations to the seminal American impressionist, William Merritt Chase. He has been called an iconoclast, a pioneer, and the late Grand Central Art Galleries of New York named him, 'L'Enfant Terrible de L'Academie'. A teacher for over 60 years, Hensche instilled in his students a profound appreciation for the beauty of nature's light and color. Between 1922 and 1930 Hensche won the Pulitzer Traveling Prize from Columbia University and the Halgarten Award from the National Academy of Design. He has exhibited at The Art Institute of Chicago, The Corcoran, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and has had many other one-man-shows. He is listed in Who's Who in American Art. Some of his students who have gone on to become nationally successful painters are William Draper, Franz Kline, and Nelson Shanks." A wonderful composition by Henry Hensche featuring a double portrait of a seated young man of Asian descent dressed in a lemon yellow vest over a white shirt with rolled up sleeves, and a young Caucasian male who bears a striking resemblance to Henry Hensche and is dressed in charcoal grey. The man in the yellow vest sits with his body turned toward the man dressed in grey, his hands crossed upon his lap and his head in profile. The other man, who may represent Hensche, is presented bust-length with his handsome visage addressing the other sitter and engaging with a hand gesture. Hensche avidly studied Monet and aimed to abide by his keen perception of color or "full color seeing" as he called it. A very special painting by this legendary artist who studied under Charles Hawthorne, founder of the Cape Cod School of Art (est. in Provincetown, 1899) and went on to embrace Hawthorne's in addition to Monet's and William Merritt Chase's colorist approach. Hensche also taught many successful artists in Provincetown, including William Draper, Franz Kline, and Nelson Shanks. Henry Hensche (Massachusetts, Louisiana / Germany, 1899 - 1992) "Grey Day" Oil on board painting of a house in a landscape with a figure in the distance. Signed lower right. Inscribed verso. Hensche is considered by many in the art world to be unparalleled as a fine color visualist in the "art of seeing and painting". He has been called an iconoclast, a pioneer, and the late Grand Central Art Galleries of New York named him, "L'Enfant Terrible of Academie". He is known for teaching his students how to "key" a painting. Between 1922 and 1930 he won the Pulitzer Traveling Prize from Columbia University and the Hallgarten Award from the National Academy of Design. About the artist: Henry Hensche (1899-1992) was German born American artist who was greatly influenced American artist, Charles W. Hawthorne. Hensche began his art studies at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he studied old masters and their techniques and was exposed to the work of French Impressionists. Hensche went on to study at the Art Students League in New York City, taking classes with George Bellows, among others, and National School of Design in New York before moving to Provincetown in 1919 and began his studies with Hawthorne at the Cape Cod School of Arts.ÃÂ By 1935 Hensche himself was teaching at Cape School of Art in Provincetown, Mass, taking over for Hawthorne and continuing to teach his students in the tradition of Hawthorne, focusing on color relationships and painting in color blocks outdoors in the brilliant sunlight.ÃÂ Hensche work is realistic in nature but more concerned with color and shape than subject matter.
