We would like to thank Prof Dr Helmut Börsch-Supan, Berlin, for confirming verbally both the artist and the sitter of the present portrait. They were not only painter and sitter, but also brothers-in-law: The painter Wilhelm Hensel married the composer Fanny Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's sister, in 1829. Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy was one of the most important composers of the Romantic period, who also championed the revival of works by Handel and Bach. Born in Hamburg in 1809, Mendelssohn Bartholdy grew up in Berlin with Fanny and two other siblings. He was already performing on the piano at the age of 9 and began composing at the age of 11. After travelling extensively, during the course of which he gave numerous concerts, he took up his first position as municipal music director in Düsseldorf in 1833 before being appointed Gewandhauskapellmeister in Leipzig two years later. Leipzig remained the centre of Mendelssohn Bartholdy's life and work before he died there in 1847 at the age of only 38, just a few months after his sister Fanny. This portrait shows Mendelssohn Bartholdy in deep black clothing and a sharply contrasting white shirt with a raised collar. The composer's hairstyle is characteristic and can also be found in other portraits. Hensel had already depicted his future brother-in-law in a drawing in 1822 - at this time the 13-year-old composer still had long hair (ill. 1; Kupferstichkabinett, SMB, inv. no. MA BA 259). Wilhelm Hensel specialised in portrait drawings from an early age and, over the course of his life, depicted both important personalities and unknown people, particularly from the Prussian capital, on over 1000 sheets. He was, however, primarily renowned for his narrative paintings. Karl Friedrich Schinkel, for example, commissioned him to paint a room in the newly built theatre. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was also a talented painter and draughtsman himself. His estate, which is kept in the Berlin State Library, contains - alongside autographs of his compositions and around 1000 letters in his own hand - numerous drawings and watercolours, including 13 views of Switzerland painted in the last year of his life.

Die Aufführungen fanden zu Ehren der Großfürstin Alexander Feodorowna und des Großfürsten Nicolaus am Berliner Königshofe statt. Alle Darsteller waren Adelige, darunter Prinz Wilhelm Radzivill, Prinz von Hessen, Herr von Podewills, Graf Gröben, Herzog Carl von Mecklenburg, die Gräfin Brühl, Gräfin Haack, Prinzessin Elise von Radzivill und viele andere. Veranstaltet wurde das Kostümfest vom damaligen Theaterdirektor Graf Brühl, und Karl Friedrich Schinkel entwarf die teils exotischen Dekorationen. - Es fehlen 7 Blätter mit Zwischentiteln und Text sowie eine Tafel. Teils stärkere Randläsuren und Ausbrüche, Einrisse (teils hinterlegt) und Gebrauchsspuren, die prachtvollen Kupfer aber in bestem, scharfen Abdruck.
