    Jan. 28, 2023

Sava Henția 1848–1904 Inauguration of the Cathedral in Curtea de Arges in 1517

    Est: €8,000 - €10,000

Sava Hentia studied at the Bucharest National University of Arts from 1865 to 1870 and subsequently received a scholarship in Paris. He enrolled in the Académie des Beaux-Arts and got a job in the workshop of Alexandre Cabanel. In 1873 he returned to Bucharest. The picture shows inauguration of the cathedral Dormition of the Mother of God in the city of Curtea de Arges (historical region of Muntenia Romania) in 1517 in the presence of its builder, the prince of Wallachia, Neagoe Basarab (approx. 1481, ruled 1512–1521) and his wife Doamna Milita Despina (approx. 1485–1554). The church is one of the most important architectural monuments in Wallachia. The prince himself is buried in the church. A fresco with the pair of donors served as a template for the design of the figures in their rich robes, on the left the prince and on the right the princess, who hands out a jewelry box. The gesture symbolizes the personal financial support of the new cathedral by the princess.
