GEORGE R.M. HEPPENSTALL (American 1901-1923) 'A Spanish Dancer' oil on canvas board, paper label on back signed George R.M. Heppenstall. Framed. Dimensions: 21'' H x 18'' W, frame, 25 1/2'' H x 22 '' W. GEORGE R.M. HEPPENSTALL, Born June 7. 1901 and died in 1923. In his short life span, this most prolific artist left a lasting impression stylizing the `orientalism' / art deco style. George began painting while in his teens. His early training began under Jean Thoburn of Peabody High school. In 1919 George completed a three year course at the New York Academy of Fine art in just six months. Heppenstall worked with and alongside the likes of Nicholas Roerich (mystical Russian Painter), and James Reynolds of the Ziegfeld Follies. When George was nineteen Lady Duff Gordon (from the fashion house of Lucille) appointed him special designer and chief designer one year later. From 1919 through 1922 he executed hundreds of costumes and fashion for theater and broadway. Heppenstall was able to sketch Ballerina Anna Pavlova from life, and design Miss Sarah Mellon's gown for the debutante ball. George aspired to become an illustrator of books where many of his watercolors were derived from. Heppenstall's work was exhibited many times during his lifetime, and he was also present at the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh's 1920 exhibition. He had a one man show in 1921 at the Wannamaker Galley in New York, and in 1922 J.J. Gillespie held an exhibition from examples of his total oeuvre. George died suddenly of pneumonia just short of his twenty-second year. The Associated Artist of Pittsburgh, organized an exhibition held at the Carnegie Institute and the Hewlett Gallery. In 1972 The Westmoreland Museum Of Art Greensburg Pennsylvania held an Exhibition of over one hundred and seventy pieces of his works of art most of them tucked away in his parents' home since his death. Thanks to his nephew Mr. Cowles Wilbert who provided those pieces of work to be shown.
