Barbara Hepworth Sold at Auction Prices

Stone sculptor, Wood Sculptor, Sculptor, b. 1903 - d. 1975

Artist Barbara Hepworth was a driving force in the modern sculpture movement. Hepworth was born in England in 1903, and she studied art at Leeds College of Art and the Royal College of Art. Afterward, she traveled to Italy where she learned stone carving; at that time, this was an unconventional course of study for a sculptor. Barbara Hepworth's sculpture work continued to take unexpected paths as she pioneered abstract carved pieces in unorthodox materials like stone and wood.

In addition to her work in sculpture, Barbara Hepworth also produced a series of successful figure drawings after World War II. These prints for sale by Barbara Hepworth were warmly received as some of her most accessible work. However, in her later years, Hepworth returned to abstract sculpture, displaying her multi-sculpture pieces in a garden, symbolic of man's relationship with nature. Abstract enthusiasts will find unique modern sculpture for sale at Invaluable.

Provenance The artist, from whom acquired by Art Bronze Foundry Limited, where acquired by the present owner We are grateful to Dr. Sophie Bowness for her assistance cataloguing this lot "I was born with the ideas of certain shapes in my mind. At least I remember as far back as seven. The whole time one's been working at it and working, trying to simplify and make more mature, get the right scale, and develop it according to the development of society" - Barbara Hepworth Michael Gaskin was a talented bronze caster who became closely associated with Hepworth during the 1950s. His skill in metal casting was instrumental in helping Hepworth realize some of her most important sculptures in bronze. He and his team at the Art Bronze Foundry worked with Hepworth to cast some of her key pieces, which expanded her sculptural vocabulary and allowed her to experiment with the material in new ways. Gaskin’s expertise was crucial in achieving the fine details and smooth surfaces that Hepworth sought in her bronze works. Hepworth’s relationship with Gaskin was not just professional but also personal, as they worked closely together on several major projects. Their collaboration was built on mutual respect, with Gaskin deeply understanding Hepworth's vision for her sculptures and her need for a high level of precision and craftsmanship. Hepworth trusted Gaskin to maintain the integrity of her designs throughout the casting process, which could sometimes involve multiple iterations to achieve the perfect result. The Art Bronze Foundry, located in London, was a key collaborator in Hepworth’s later works, particularly in casting her sculptures in bronze. The foundry was known for its high-quality work, and Hepworth’s relationship with the foundry was a turning point in her ability to create large-scale sculptures in metal. Before working with Gaskin and the Art Bronze Foundry, Hepworth had primarily worked with materials like wood, stone, and plaster. The decision to move into bronze casting marked an important shift in her practice. She was able to expand the scale of her work and explore the fluidity and versatility that bronze offered. The foundry played a pivotal role in transforming her small maquettes and models into finished sculptures, often with complex casting processes, including lost-wax casting, to preserve the details of Hepworth’s original designs.

    BARBARA HEPWORTH

    Est: CHF60,000 - CHF80,000

BARBARA HEPWORTH (Wakefield 1903–1975 St Ives) Three forms (Extra eye). 1969. Polished Bronze. Signed, dated, numbered and with foundry stamp below on the plinth: Barbara Hepworth 1969 5/9 MS. H 20 cm. Provenance: - With Gimpel & Hanover Galerie, Zurich. - Private collection, Switzerland, acquired on 18.11.1975 from the above gallery and thence by descent. Literature: Alan Bowness: The complete sculpture of Barbara Hepworth 1960–1969, London 1971, pp. 48/49, no. 487 (different cast in illustration). Hailed by The Guardian in 1975 as "probably the most important artist in art history," Barbara Hepworth was a pioneer of modern and abstract art. In the 1960s she experienced a surge in productivity and, inspired by international recognition and new technical possibilities, created 227 works. The transition from stone sculpture, which Hepworth pursued primarily in the early years of her career, to bronze casting in the late 1950s, allowed the artist to explore the versatility of the medium and return to geometric shapes like circles, rectangles and squares. Her sculptures, which often consist of several parts, invite interaction and integration, as in the monumental works “Squares with two Circles” and “Four-Square (Walk Through)”. But even in smaller works like “Three Forms (Extra Eye)”, the involvement of the viewer is clear. The work comprises two squares and a rectangle in harmonious equilibrium. In order to encourage interaction and play with the light, these are pierced by cylinders. By this time, Hepworth had cemented her status as a giant of British art alongside contemporaries such as Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson. Tragically, she died six years after this work was created; so this sculpture may be counted as one of the artist's late works. ------------------------------------------------- BARBARA HEPWORTH (Wakefield 1903–1975 St Ives) Three forms (Extra eye). 1969. Polierte Bronze. Literatur: Alan Bowness: The complete sculpture of Barbara Hepworth 1960–1969, London 1971, S. 48/49, Nr. 487 (mit Abb. anderer Guss).
