James Dowling Herbert (1762-1837) A Knight of Tara, so inscribed, within a verre +glomis+ border, watercolour over pencil, 34.5 x 43cm The original back board faintly inscribed 'Resolution of the Club: Mild and obliging when treated with friendship and respect; Impetuous and terrible when these are wanting. Jan 13th 1814. With aroused anger do the flint bears fire which much inforced yeilds a lusty spark and straight is cold again. July 15th 1816.' This depiction of the farmer is a rare record of the duelling societies that existed in regency Ireland. Herbert, who had many commissions in Meath was a colourful character, artist, actor and auctioneer, and this could be a self portrait. Ref Strickland Vol 1 p.473 et seq.
