    Jan. 26, 2017

ARSÈNE HERBINIER (1869-?). SALON DES CENT. 1899. 24x15 inches, 61x15 cm.

    Est: $500 - $750

ARSÈNE HERBINIER (1869-?) SALON DES CENT. 1899. 24x15 1/4 inches, 61x15 1/4 cm. Condition A-: minor creases and abrasions in margins and images. Herbinier was called upon to design the poster for one of the last exhibitions of the Salon des Cent. A student of Grasset, Herbinier was best known for his decorative portfolios and illustrations replete with pure Art Nouveau floral imagery, maidens and design. Here, "inspired by the theme of the woman-flower, Herbinier draws a poster where the vegetal world transforms the feminine figure into a sort of floral outgrowth. The hawthorn wraps itself around her body and blends with the volutes of her hair" (Salon des Cent p. 42). Art Nouveau p. 26, Salon des Cent 12.

"In the early Edwardian age, there was perhaps no make of motor car more generally favoured by aristocracy and the public alike than those produced by Comte (later marquis) de Dion and M. Bouton" (Khachadourian, p. 8). Even La Belle Otero (1868-1965)-the legendary beauty and popular entertainer known for her romantic conquests of royals from the Prince of Wales to Czar Nicholas II-finds her mini-Bouton an ideal vehicle for providing a respite from her persistent suitors. And from the looks of her merrily-cranking chauffeur, he's a fan of the voiturette as well. And deservedly so: the de Dion-Bouton automobile company-in existence from 1883 to 1938 and for a time the world's largest automobile manufacturer-was well-known for their quality, reliability and durability. And Herbinier's approach-corralling near-photographic dependability within florid excess-works quite effectively, most especially in the tangle of fronds and fir

ARSENE HERBINIER (1869-?) SALON DES CENT. 1899.

23 1/2x15 1/2 inches. Condition B: minor paper loss, repaired tears and creases in margins and image; vertical and horizontal folds. Framed. In a style that clearly bespeaks an apprenticeship in the studios of Eugene Grasset, Herbinier depicts a young woman in profile enjoying a bunch of wild roses. Drawn using flat tones and shades of brown, this archetypical Art Nouveau image, with its thick outlining, has been rendered as if designed for a stained-glass window. Salon des Cent p. 78.
