As Jaroslav Herbst’s painting of two nude young women in an apple orchard demonstrates, over time Herbst developed his own entirely unique interpretation of painting based in bold contrasts of light and color and in a concept of space derived from Cubism. His oeuvre, which made its public debut at an exhibition at Galerie Hugo Feigl in Prague in 1934, enjoyed unexpected acclaim and positive reviews from critics. Feigl held another Herbst exhibition in 1937, but afterwards the painter fell into oblivion. He was not commemorated until 1995, when his work was exhibited at Galerie Ztichlá klika in Prague and a Revolver Revue article presented a series of reproductions.

Featuring an accent of naïveté, this expressively painted Veronica represents one area in the work of self-taught painter Jaroslav Herbst. Born to a village family in Dušníky at the foot of Říp Mountain, Herbst studied mechanical and later structural engineering at the Technical University in Prague. He started to focus on painting in 1912 as a self-taught artist. After World War I he returned to his family farm permanently, running the farm and painting in total isolation from the art world. Exhibited at Galerie Dr. Feigl, Prague, March–April 1934.

Jaroslav Herbst, Painting, Ferry Boats at Dusniky, 1925

    Est: €1,920 - €2,400

Oil on canvas Czech Republic, 1925 Jaroslav Herbst (1887-1971) - Czech painter Signed and dated lower right 'J. Herbst / 25.' With an old exhibition label of Galerie Dr. Feigl, Prague, on the stretcher Dimensions: 50.5 x 60.5 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Berlin Typically expressive landscape scene by the Czech artist Jaroslav Herbst, whose works are rarely found on the market Jaroslav Herbst found his subject matter in the rural surrounding of his hometown. After studying in Prague, he returned to Dusniky nad Vltavou, where he painted most of his works. Thus the present painting shows a landscape at Dusniky, with a small farmhouse in the center, flanked by fields and a river with two ferry boats. Significantly influenced by expressionism, the works by the Czech artist are characterized by expressive brushwork and powerful color schemes. Here Herbst conceived a complex figurative composition whose distorted perspective creates a wonderful dynamic. In 1934 the present work was exhibited at the Galerie Hugo Feigl, one of Prague's most important art galleries at the time of the First Republic. The painting is signed and dated lower right 'J. Herbst / 25.' It is in good condition. The canvas is partially a little thinned along the edges. The frame shows some wear and minor chips. The image measures 50.5 x 60.5 cm. The framed work measures 68.5 x 77.5 cm. Jaroslav Herbst (1887-1971) Jaroslav Herbst initially studied engineering in Prague, but from 1912 he started devoting himself to painting as a self-taught artist. During the First World War he served in the army. After the war, Herbst then exclusively dedicated himself to painting. The majority of his oeuvre was created in the 1930s. Herbst painted primarily landscapes and still lifes as well as some allegorical scenes. His works show reminiscences of artists such as Vincent van Gogh and the influence of the expressionists, which substantially defined Czech art of the 1920s and 1930s.
