  • Herda (Franz, 1887-1965). Portrait of Albert

Herda (Franz, 1887-1965). Portrait of Albert

    Est: £25,000 - £30,000

Herda (Franz, 1887-1965). Portrait of Albert Einstein in his study, at the Institute for Advanced Studies, Princeton University, 1949, oil on canvas, signed, with signature in ink of Albert Einstein attached to the lower edge of the frame, behind a perspex mount, 56 x 46 cm (22 x 18 ins), framed Provenance: By descent from the artist to the present owner (further documentation available on request). Franz Herda (1887-1965) the Munich painter, was born in New York, and studied at the academies in Berlin (where he was taught by Max Liebermann), Paris and Munich. Having seen active service as an fighter pilot in the first world war, he lived briefly in Berlin and then in Berg, Bavaria, maintaining a studio in Munich-Schwabing, producing portraits and impressionist landscapes, and from 1930 to around 1942, was Professor at the Hannover Art Academy. Herda took an active part in the Resistance to the Nazi regime in the late 1930s and early 1940s, helping Jewish and other political refugees to avoid capture. One of these, Albertine Gimpel was to become his wife in 1948. Despite the destruction of some of Herda's output in the bombings of Munich during 1943, the Lenbachhaus in Munich holds one of his impressionist landscapes from circa 1933-34, entitled Winter Sunshine, which was purchased directly from the artist in 1936. The artist was introduced to Albert Einstein during a visit to the USA in late 1948/early 1949 by a mutual friend, Dr Bucky (1880-1963), and was allowed to paint Einstein's portrait over three days in 1949. A preparatory study, dated Princeton 1949, is now in the collection of the Bern Historisches Museum. Through contact with Einstein, Herda received a number of other commissions for portraits from the academic community in Princeton. The present work, a masterly portrayal of the great genius of 20th century science, shows him in relaxed mood, seated in his study at Princeton, with his pipe and a tin of Bond Street tobacco beside him. While many photographs of Einstein by the likes of Lotte Jacobi and Yousuf Karsh are celebrated and well-known, original portraits of Einstein drawn or painted from life are very rare and even more rarely available on the open market. The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington own a half-length oil portrait on canvas by Max Westfield (1882-1971), painted in 1944 and given by the artist as a gift to the Smithsonian Institution in 1967; a pencil on paper drawing and an oil on burlap modernist style portrait by Josef Scharl (1896-1954), both drawn in 1950 and acquired by or given to the Smithsonian Institution in 1969 & 1966 respectively; and a gouache and ink on board portrait by Ernest Hamlin Baker (1889-1975), drawn in 1946 and given to the Smithsonian Institution in 1978 by Time magazine. Besides these there are a few portraits in private hands: Emil Orlik (1870-1932) drew Einstein's portrait in 1917 (as well as producing photo portraits and prints of Einstein in the 1920s), and Alfons Blomme (1889-1979), the Belgian painter met Einstein in De Haan in 1933, and painted his portrait during EinsteinÆs brief period of exile there.
