MANUEL RIVERA HERNÁNDEZ (Granada, 1928 - Madrid, 1995). "Dark mirror", 1971. Mixed media (metal mesh and wire) on painted wood structure. Signed in the lower right corner. Signed, dated and titled on the back. Provenance: Juana Mordó Gallery. Measurements: 100 x 81 cm. Manuel Rivera, founding member of the group El Paso, defends in his works the use of the matter by itself. He turns metallic fabrics into a means of expression and even introduces hooks, buckles or wires that symbolically sew wounds or allude to tearing. The space-light also acquires a relevant role in his production, achieving optical vibrations that provoke a moiré effect and glazes of light and dark. On this occasion Rivera continues with his characteristic abstract language based on irregular geometry, with an organic character in the arrangement of the metal mesh. It is an open style, whose fundamental characteristic is the conception of the sculptural surface as a whole, as an open field, without limits and without hierarchies. Manuel Rivera was a founding member of the influential "El Paso group", being one of the pioneers and introducers of the Spanish avant-garde art movement after World War II. Rivera began his training as a sculptor in the workshop of Martín Simón, his interests diverted towards painting and he trained at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de Sevilla (now part of the University of Seville) where he began his studies in 1945 at the age of 18. His first major exhibition was at the Press Association of Granada in 1947. After completing his training, he moved to Madrid in 1951, where he became known as a painter of murals and frescoes in public spaces and churches. This led him to receive commissions as a muralist and fresco painter in cities throughout Spain. Initially his work explored the style of figurative art, although in the 1950s he turned to abstraction. In 1953 he participated in the Congress of Abstract Art in Santander. In 1957 he co-founded the group El Paso in Madrid with his colleagues Rafael Canogar, Luis Feito, Juana Francés, Manolo Millares, Pablo Serrano, Antonio Suárez and Antonio Saura. From 1957 to 1960, Rivera and the other artists of this group jointly presented several exhibitions in Spain and abroad that had a profound impact on the development of Spanish art. The last exhibition of the group took place at the L'Attico gallery in Rome in 1960. The Marlborough Gallery presented a retrospective exhibition of the group's works entitled "El Paso, 1957-1960" in May and June 2004. In 1967 Rivera began experimenting with artistic techniques and ideas from Asian cultures. In 1981 he received the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts of Spain. He also received the Cross of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of France. He is currently represented at the British Museum in London, the MoMA in New York, the Musée National d'Art Moderne de la Villa in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Zurich, the Museum of Abstract Art in Cuenca, the Tate Gallery in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the J. Est: €4,000 - €5,000

MANUEL HERNÁNDEZ MOMPÓ (Valencia, 1927 - Madrid, 1992) "Peasant women looking out of the window", 1976. Mixed media on cardboard. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Work reproduced in the catalogue raisonné of the artist "Manuel Hernández. Paintings, sculptures and drawings, 1969-1986", vol. II, ref. 1976/54, p. 286. Provenance: Benlliure Gallery, Valencia. Measurements: 54 x 32 cm; 81 x 72 cm (frame). Work treated from an abstract language of simple forms tending towards geometry, in which the artist has managed to introduce the spectator into the aesthetic experience of experimentation, typical of the creation of a concrete and subjective aesthetic language. The son of a painting teacher, Hernández Mompó alternated his primary and secondary school studies with classes at the Escuela de Artes Aplicadas y Oficios Artísticos in Valencia, which he entered in 1943. In 1948 he obtained a grant to paint in Granada, at the Residence for Painters, and three years later a new grant enabled him to travel to Paris. In the French capital he came into contact with the circles of informalist painters, whose influence would mark his later work, leaving behind the landscapes and portraits that had dominated his oeuvre until then. Between 1954 and 1955 he spent a long period in Rome, on a grant from the Department of Culture of the Ministry of National Education to study at the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in the Italian capital. In 1954 he took part in the Viareggio International Exhibition, where he was awarded the Italian Navigation Prize. He left Italy and settled in Amsterdam, where he again frequented the informalist cenacles. In 1957 he returned to Spain and settled in Aravaca (Madrid). The following year he was awarded a grant from the Juan March Foundation in Madrid, and won the Grand National Painting Prize and a first medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. During the sixties and seventies he alternated his residence between Madrid, Ibiza, and in 1973 he spent a year in California. On his return to Spain he settled in Mallorca. Hernández Mompó exhibited in the main capitals of Europe and the United States, and took part in national and international exhibitions. Among his most outstanding awards was the Unesco Prize received at the 34th Venice Biennale in 1968. In 1984 he was awarded the National Prize for Fine Arts by the Ministry of Culture. His youthful style was soon influenced in a definitive way by abstract expressionism and informalism, although his works never lost reality as a reference point. In his production, Hernández Mompó captures a figurative and poetic imagery, harmoniously mixed with abstract elements and rich superimposition effects. Hernández Mompó is represented at the IVAM in Valencia, the Museo Nacional Reina Sofía, the Museo de Arte Abstracto in Cuenca, the British Museum in London, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Chase Manhattan Bank Collection in New York and the Winterthur Museum in Switzerland, among many others.

MANUEL RIVERA HERNÁNDEZ (Granada, 1928 - Madrid, 1995). "Cadencia, 35". Mixed media on sackcloth. Signed in the lower right corner. Signed and titled on the back. Size: 81 x 65 cm; 87 x 72 cm (frame). In this work the author uses an abstract language, based on irregular geometry, with an organic character both in its outline and in the colours. Thus, as we see here, the pictorial forms are the result of a thought-out composition and experimentation, with an image of a gestural nature, not limited to a composition, but going beyond it, indicating to the spectator that it is about forms, ideas or suggestions that go beyond the boundaries of the purely pictorial. This work on sackcloth is an example of Rivera's work, in which he explored the material and other elements such as sands. It is likely that the work belongs to an early stage of his career, before his trip to Paris, as this is when he began to work with this material.
