Already as a 10 year old, he began an apprenticeship in the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory. He took drawing lessons and trained in figure painting from 1791. From 1793, he studied at the Vienna Academy. He became one of the best porcelain painters of the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory. In 1801, he received the title of ‘figure painter of first class’. Until 1805, Herr painted mostly miniatures, and since 1816 he created porcelain pictures after old masters, principally on display at the Royal Picture Gallery in Vienna. His illustrious clients included Emperor Franz I, who bought his works as presents. Many of his works went to England. Claudius Herr worked for the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory until 1838. Alt-Wien Porcelain Factory The Viennese porcelain manufactory was founded by Claudius Innocentius du Paquier due to a privilege given by the emperor Carl VI in 1718. Thanks to this privilege, du Paquier preserved a monopoly in porcelain manufacture in the empire. During the reign of Maria Theresa, the manufactory came into the possession of the empire and the signet, the famous underglaze blue shield, was brought into use.
