      FRAY MIGUEL HERRERA (MEXICAN 1700-1789) Annunciation to Saints Anne and Joachim,1756 oil on canvas 29 x 29 cm (11 1/2 x 11 1/2 in.) signed, dated and titled along lower edge PROVENANCE Collection of Beatriz de Regil Muse (1901-1983) Thence by descent in the family to the present owner LOT NOTES The daughter of Katherine Baker (1869-1925) and Ernesto Regil Fajardo (1863-1903), Beatriz de Regil grew up at the Hacienda Uayalceh. Her maternal grandfather, Augustus Baker (1826-1891), was a British consul at Veracruz, while her paternal grandfather, Pedro Manuel de Regil y Peon (b. 1835), was one of the first editors of the Yucatan newspaper El Pensamiento y Pimienta y Mostaza. She married Benjamin Muse (1898-1986), an American politician, diplomat, lawyer and soldier, in 1925. CONDITION Observed out of the frame, the painting appears in age-appropriate condition. The canvas has been trimmed and mounted on board. Small patch to the back, 2 x 2.5 cm (3/4 x 1 in.). A few pinholes at the perimeter, only one noticeable. Inspection under UV light shows retouching to the angel’s proper right leg and areas next to the figures of Anne and Joachim, as well as older retouching to the columns and background. framed dimensions: 35 x 35 cm (13 3/4 x 13 3/4 in.) Detalles de conservación. 84 x 62 cm (oval). Fray Miguel de Herrera fue un prolífico pintor novohispano que realizó tanto lienzos con motivos religiosas como retratos. Algunas de sus principales obras se encuentran en el Museo Nacional de Historia, un retrato de Benedicto XIII y uno de Felipe II.
