(BRITISH 1815-1907) Horses in a farmyard; Horses by a stable (a pair) each oil on board each 20 cm (tondo) (2) (pair) Herring Jr. was born in Surrey, England, and he followed in his father's footsteps, receiving artistic training and guidance from him. He began his career as an artist at a young age, and by his early twenties, he was already exhibiting his paintings at prestigious venues such as the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Similar to his father, Herring Jr. became known for his skillful depictions of horses in motion, capturing their anatomy, movement, and spirit with great accuracy. He also painted scenes of horse racing, hunting, and country life, continuing the family tradition of sporting art. While Herring Jr. inherited his father's talent and technical proficiency, he also developed his own style and artistic vision. His paintings often featured a softer, more romantic quality compared to his father's work, with a focus on atmospheric landscapes and emotive compositions.

The onset of the Industrial Revolution brought great prosperity to Britain but also nostalgia for the countryside as it once was, untouched by progress. There was a growing demand for paintings of the rural idyll and for scenes depicting farm animals. However, this type of painting also became the ideal genre in which proud owners could display their prized animals. The foundation of the Linnean Society in 1788, named after the creator of the now universal system of nomenclature for plants and animals, expressly encouraged ‘the cultivation of the Science of Natural History in all its branches.’ Thus, the systematic breeding of the thoroughbred horse, the foxhound and farm livestock encouraged the field of animal portraiture in which famous sires and prize-winning cattle and sheep were presented. Here is a prime example by Herring Jr. that shows this new style.
