John Frederick Herring junior (1820-1907) 'Horses, pigs, ducks and poultry in a farmyard', oil on canvas, painted as a circle, 59cm diameter This unfinished work provides an interesting insight into Herring's painting technique. Working from right to left of the picture the artist has firstly laid down a loose compositional sketch in brown oil glaze which is then finished to a high degree in the second phase.
