    Oil on canvas. Signed and dated. 119 x 201 cm; 158.5 x 242 cm (frame). He came from a wealthy family in France, his grandfather was the famous painter Louis Etienne Hersent, who was a pupil of Jacques-Louis David, as well as an esteemed painter by King Louis XVIII and Charles X. By François Étienne Hersent himself we can find a canvas of the same subject in the Old Town Hall of Saint Denis, catalogued by the French Ministry of Culture, as well as information on another large canvas painted some years before, in 1857, depicting The Siege of Sebastopol. This work was located in the Palaces of Versailles and Trianon, although in 1995 the Versailles catalogue lists it as missing. Provenance: Private collection of a French noble family.
