      ERWIN L. HESS ORIGINAL OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING: The arbor, a night scene with a figure in a row boat and sail ships in the distance. This is the only known oil painting executed by nationally known artist and historian Edwin L. Hess; Unsigned but verified on verso by Hess' s son who was present while this was being painted. Hess's son suggested the figure in the rowboat in the foreground; framed 30"H x 35" W; Provenance information which includes a hand-signed letter from the artist's son on verso. We are privileged to be handling the personal collection and memorabilia of nationally known and syndicated cartoonist, Erwin L. Hess (1906 - 1977, America). In addition to his artistic contributions, his personal collection encompasses what is thought to be the most complete archive of early American Pro-Football ephemera in the world.Hess is perhaps best known for his contributions to the art of Cartooning and book illustration. In addition to using his given name Hess used two known pseudonyms, Erwin L. Darwin. He joined the Milwaukee Journal Staff drawing Sports Cartoons, Editorial Page Illustrations and Hunting and Fishing panoramas.Hess also developed the popular cartoon feature, "Do You Remember" which evolved into "Americana Alamode" and finally into the nationally syndicated cartoon, "The Good Ole Days" which he illustrated until 1981. In the Chicago Sun Syndicate, he illustrated the Daily comic page feature, "Captain Midnight" which ran from 1942 to 1945. He was a comic book artist for Dell publications between 1939 and throughout the 1940s and an interior illustrator and occasional cover painter for Whitman Publishing which included several "Big Little Books" and "Better Little Books". In addition to his Artistic Career, Mr. Hess is also noteworthy for his unique collection of National League, Pro-American football ephemera. It was nationally featured in the November 2001, "Market Sports Report" and in a 1953 article in a Pro-Football Magazine. Mr. Hess has compiled what may be the largest clippings collection in the world of early Pro-Football articles. The collection began in 1920 when Mr. Hess saw his first Packer Football Game. In the Sports Section of the following day's Newspaper was a printed story of the game he had just seen; Mr. Hess clipped the article and his historic collection began.His collection includes National Football League, from its inception in 1919 on through 1951 Football related Editorials, General News Items, Scandals, Feature Articles, Images, Cartoons, Early Advertisements, Drawings pertaining to The "Old American League" of the 1920's, the Six-Team Rival League begun in 1940, Canadian Pro Football, and some Minor League and Semi-Pro Football. Mr. Hess began saving Newspaper stories about Pro-Football beginning with 1919 back issues and going into the 1950's. Hess's collection includes articles from the papers of, "Milwaukee, Chicago, New York, Detroit, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, Baltimore, Dallas, Los Angeles, Green Bay, San Francisco, Cleveland, Indianapolis, San Diego, Tulsa and others".Mr. Hess archived these pages on hundreds of white-mounting board sheets, each approximately 17 ½" H x 13" W. Mr. Hess used his background in Newspaper publishing and typesetting to best effect by carefully mounting each clipping by date.
