        RUDOLF HESS

        Est: $600 - $800

RUDOLF HESS (1894 - 1987) Nazi German Deputy Fuehrer and second in command after Goering, Hess was one of Hitler's closest confidantes and friends. In an unauthorized peace mission, Hess flew a German fighter to England and surrendered, purportedly attempting to ally Germany with Great Britain against Russia. His mission, of course, failed and Hess was imprisoned at Spandau where he was found hanged in 1987. Scarce inscribed signed book: 'Das Deutsche Jahr Feiern der Jungen Nation' ('The German Year Celebrate the Young Nation') (Munich: Franz Eher Verlag). 1939. 216pp. 4to. in beige cloth with brown titles. Starting to break along the gutter and front cover, with dust wrapper. The book is an illustrated glorification of the Nazis and Germany of the time, with photos of rallies, marches, Hitler, etc. interspersed with patriotic songs, pastoral photographs, country folk, etc. Hess pens an inscription on the front flyleaf, not fully translated but the book is clearly gifted in honor of the 'German Day of History...Christmas 1940'. Very good.

In an unauthorized peace mission, Hess flew a German fighter to England and surrendered, purportedly attempting to ally Germany with Great Britain against Russia. His mission, of course, failed and Hess was imprisoned at Spandau where he was found hanged in 1987. Bold signature on the verso of a postcard showing an old home in Eifel, Kreis Mayen. Beside Hess' signature is a green stamp indicating that there had been a reunion in Mayen of the 'Alte Garde', long-standing party members who had been members from 1919 to 1923 or had participated in the 1923 Hitler putsch. Of course, it would have made perfect sense for Hess, certainly a member, to have attended and to have addressed the gathering. Fine.

RUDOLF HESS' PERSONAL 'COBURG' BLOTTER AND LETTER HOLDER An important pair of personalized relics once owned and used by Deputy Fuhrer and Minister RUDOLF HESS (1894-1987), including a roller-type blotter and a letter holder. The blotter bears a crystal handle with sterling silver end pieces, one of which bears Hess' unique 'R H' monogram, the other end engraved: 'Coburg, 10.7.192'. Both engravings are of a period style and absolutely show vintage workmanship and legitimate wear. The 9.125 x 2.25 in. blotter rests upon a 10.25 x 3.25 in. crystal tray. Also present is a letter holder, crystal with silver arched bands at the top, one bearing Hess' monogram which is engraved identically to the monogram found on the blotter. Both pieces bear a '800' purity stamp and the hallmark of Dresden silversmith Hermann Behrnd. The letter holder bears a small chip at lower-right front corner, else both pieces are fine. These items were likely presented to Hess at a rally, speech or a major meeting at Coburg on July 7, 1921 - over a year before Hitler and the S.A. would famously march at the city.

Rudolf Hess Signed Christmas Greeting Card

Rudolf Hess Signed Christmas Greeting Card The card reads : December 1937 With best wishes for Christmas and for the sixth year of work in the National Socialist rebuilding Heil Hitler Rudolf Hess On the rear of the card there features a handwritten dedication written by Rudolf Hess to his wife and is signed and dated 1937. Rudolf Walter Richard Hess (Heß in German; 26 April 1894 – 17 August 1987) was a German politician and a leading member of the Nazi Party in Nazi Germany. Appointed Deputy Führer to Adolf Hitler in 1933, Hess served in that position until 1941, when he flew solo to Scotland in an attempt to negotiate peace with the United Kingdom during World War II. He was taken prisoner and eventually convicted of crimes against peace, serving a life sentence until his suicide in 1987. Hess enlisted as an infantryman in the Imperial German Army at the outbreak of World War I. He was wounded several times over the course of the war and was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd Class, in 1915. Shortly before the war ended, Hess enrolled to train as an aviator, but he saw no action in that role. He left the armed forces in December 1918 with the rank of Leutnant der Reserve. In 1919, Hess enrolled in the University of Munich, where he studied geopolitics under Karl Haushofer, a proponent of the concept of Lebensraum ("living space"), which became one of the pillars of Nazi ideology. Hess joined the Nazi Party on 1 July 1920 and was at Hitler's side on 8 November 1923 for the Beer Hall Putsch, a failed Nazi attempt to seize control of the government of Bavaria. While serving time in jail for this attempted coup, he assisted Hitler with Mein Kampf, which became a foundation of the political platform of the Nazi Party. After Hitler became Chancellor in January 1933, Hess was appointed Deputy Führer of the Nazi Party in April. He was elected to the Reichstag in the March elections, was made a Reichsleiter of the Nazi Party in June and in December 1933 he became Minister without Portfolio in Hitler's cabinet. He was also appointed in 1938 to the Cabinet Council and in August 1939 to the Council of Ministers for Defense of the Reich. Hitler decreed on the outbreak of war on 1 September 1939 that Hermann Göring was his official successor, and named Hess as next in line. In addition to appearing on Hitler's behalf at speaking engagements and rallies, Hess signed into law much of the government's legislation, including the Nuremberg Laws of 1935, which stripped the Jews of Germany of their rights in the lead-up to the Holocaust. On 10 May 1941, Hess made a solo flight to Scotland, where he hoped to arrange peace talks with the Duke of Hamilton, whom he believed to be a prominent opponent of the British government's war policy. The British authorities arrested Hess immediately on his arrival and held him in custody until the end of the war, when he was returned to Germany to stand trial at the Nuremberg trials of major war criminals in 1946. During much of his trial, he claimed to be suffering from amnesia, but he later admitted this was a ruse. The Court convicted him of crimes against peace and of conspiracy with other German leaders to commit crimes. He served a life sentence in Spandau Prison; the Soviet Union blocked repeated attempts by family members and prominent politicians to win his early release. While still in custody as the only prisoner in Spandau, he hanged himself in 1987 at the age of 93. After his death, the prison was demolished to prevent it from becoming a neo-Nazi shrine. The card measures 165mm x 105mm and it is in excellent condition
