In 1961, Eva Hesse married the sculptor Tom Doyle and in 1964/1965 she spent a year with him at the home of the collectors Friedrich and Isabel Arnhard Scheidt in Kettwig an der Ruhr near Essen. During her studio stay in their textile factory, Eva Hesse found materials in the abandoned production halls that inspired her to work intensively on sculptural works. After her return to New York in 1965, Hesse became widely known for these works. The drawings she created at the same time contain numerous elements that she later used for her unconventional installations and objects. The sheet offered here, rendered in a sophisticated mixed technique, masterfully demonstrates her constant oscillation between figuration and abstraction. In sehr schöner Gesamterhaltung With craquelure in places. After studying at the Cooper Union and the Yale School of Art and Architecture, Eva Hesse began working as an artist in 1960. She was influenced by her teachers Josef Albers and Rico Lebrun as well as by the omnipresent Abstract Expressionism, with a particular interest in the second generation of the movement, which focused on colour field painting. However, Hesse refused to be pigeonholed and developed her own artistic practice. Although she repeatedly flirted with figuration, she was primarily concerned with expressing the intangible, with expressing a recurring psychological motif such as a state of mind, a mood, or a memory. In the beginning, she created a series of paintings known as "Spectres" (ghost paintings): shadowy pictorial spaces that anticipate the even freer paintings that she subsequently worked on. The latter provide a kind of hinge to Hesse's sculptural works, which she would begin a few years later. Early paintings by the artist, who died prematurely at the age of 34, are very rare. The work offered here shows the full power of her art, which broke with rigid norms and forms in search of the magical and playful. Eva Hesse (American, 1936-1970) - Untitled Signed and dated ‘Eva Hesse 1960’ bottom right, ink and wash on paper. 13 ½ x 11 in. (34.3 x 27.9cm) Provenance The Artist. Private Collection, Pennsylvania (gifted directly from the artist.) Private Collection, Pennsylvania (by family descent). Exhibition “Yale Collects Yale, 1950-1993” Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut, April 30-July 31, 1993. “Four Perspectives on Fifty Years,” The Westmoreland, Greensburg, Pennsylvania, September 27, 2009-January 3, 2010. Literature Sarah M. Newman and Lesley K. Baier, eds., Yale Collects Yale, 1950-1993, New Haven, CT: Yale University Art Gallery, 1993, p. 39. Lot Essay When the present Untitled drawing was lent to the exhibition “Yale Collects Yale,” the collector wrote for the exhibition catalogue: “I recall fondly my time at Yale and my friendship with Eva. We first met at the Yale-Norfolk Summer Art School in 1957. Her drawing was a wedding gift received in May or June of 1960. Eva and I spent the day in the Village shopping for my wedding dress, and later she had me look through her drawings to select one.” The collector and Hesse met while students in the fine art department at Yale, studying with Josef Albers, among others. The two became fast friends as roommates at the summer program, and the drawing on offer here is accompanied by a personal collection of letters and postcards from the artist to her dear friend. Featured on the PBS television program Antiques Roadshow in 2022, the drawing and ephemera provide an intimate snapshot of a moment in Hesse’s development as an artist. While a seemingly figural composition, the Untitled drawing also foretells Hesse’s mature works, draped and hanging constructions made of fabric, rope, plastic, fiberglass and other everyday materials, manipulated in fascinating three-dimensional forms. Her experimental use of materials and the variable nature of her work in relation to space both had tremendous impact on a generation of contemporary artists, despite her short career. In 1969 Hesse was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and after several surgeries, she passed away the following year at age 34. Hesse’s work continues to play a vital role in the history of art, and is featured in the collections of the Tate Modern, London, The Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and was featured in a 2016 documentary film and numerous international exhibitions.

Eva Hesse (German-American 1936-1970) for Hauser & Wirth Hauser & Wirth Artistic Blanket 80in. x 63in 100 % Cashmere, Made in Scotland Both Hesse's life and art were fraught with extreme contradictions. Almost impossibly demanding of herself, she was nevertheless completely open to the unknown. The dynamic of her work was not expression, but discovery. She wrote, "It is my main concern to go beyond what I know and what I can know." She pulled new meanings from deep in her psyche and gave them new formal structures that related to order, yet also resisted it.
