      NICOLAS-AUGUSTE HESSE (Paris 1795-1869 Paris) Ulysses Recognized by Eurycleia. Brush and ink and wash with white heightening over pencil, 1819. 176x205 mm; 7x9 1/4 inches. Signed and dated "Rome 1819" in ink, lower right recto. Hesse studied under his brother, the artist Henri-Joseph Hesse and under baron Antoine-Jean Gros; he attended the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in August 1811 and won the 1818 Prix de Rome with the oil painting Baucis and Philemon Receiving Jupiter and Mercury.
