      Est: $3,875 - $5,425

Still-life with Jasmine, Poppies, a cactus and other flowers, on a marble ledge pencil, watercolour and bodycolour with gum arabic 141/2 x 11 in. (36.8 x 27.9 cm.) NOTES Hewlett was a flower painter in the Dutch tradition, exploiting the dramatic effects of bright lighting and dark background, and rendering his subjects with the exactitude of the botanical artist. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1799 and 1807 and worked mainly in Bath, with studios in Bridge Street and Camden Place. He was probably the son of another James Hewlett, also a flower painter.
